What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary team in Knoxville, TN. The successful applicant will have experience in many different areas of engineering to address system level challenges throughout the life cycle of a project; design, research, testing, development, and implementation. Join us in Knoxville to develop creative solutions to unique national security challenges!

During the design process the selected applicant would be responsible for handling customer requirements and deriving them into functional and operational requirements. Our team is also responsible for selecting commercial productions for procurement or researching and developing solutions that meet specifications and customer requirements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Build system or sub-system test plans that are traced to requirements for system testing.

  • Implement the requirements through design definition activities, such as design reports, engineering drawings, and specifications.

  • Implement test plans either in laboratory, test field, or implementation site.

  • Complete activities related to system level design, engineering, and testing.

  • Design, conduct and document tests, experiments, and results to evaluate sensor technologies/system performance.

  • Apply systematic scientific methods to evaluate commercial technologies to determine their ability to meet sponsor performance requirements.

  • Present at technical design reviews.

  • Interact regularly with internal and external customers from a variety of technical and professional areas.

  • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams.

This position will require up to 25% travel.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at the Y12 Nuclear Complex in Oak Ridge, TN.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related STEM field, plus five (5) years relevant experience.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level Security Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with the following is desired:

  • Communicating major elements of design, engineering, maintenance, processes, or policies.

  • Physical security system Design, Testing, and Engineering.

  • Project planning and project management.

  • Intrusion detection.

  • Working with AE design firms PE desired but not required.

  • Creating and interpreting Civil and Structural IFC Construction Drawings, Work Packages, and Inspection Test Plans.

  • Managing Subcontract construction work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and industry standards.

  • Quality Assurance and Construction Quality Control, especially at a DOE or NNSA facility.

  • Construction Surveying Layout and CADD drafting concepts.

  • Oversight of structural steel installations per applicable standards such as AISC, AWS, RCSC, and Applicable ASTM codes.

  • Oversight of concrete installations per applicable standards such as ACI & CRSI.

  • Hydraulics and implementing storm water designs.

  • Strong Project management experience, preferably a PMI certification.

  • Ability analyze and breakdown systems in manageable and discrete parts for better understanding and troubleshooting.

  • Willing to work in an environment that is highly collaborative.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in and lead multi-functional teams to support customers with shifting and evolving requirements and due dates.

  • Process a strong dedication to positive teaming dynamic, detail oriented and strong written and verbal skills.

  • Ability to excel within a fast-paced dynamic environment.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Familiarity and understanding with construction methods, materials, and quality are aligned with standards such as IBC, ACI, AISC, OSHA, DOE 413, DOE NQA-1, NFPA 101.

  • Ability to collaborate efficiently with DOE Clients, Project Managers, Project Engineer, Surveyors, Superintendents, and Craft General Foremen to execute construction deliverables.

  • Provide verification of work in progress to ensure requirements of safety, site security, quality, environmental control, and schedule are met.

  • Provide technical support in all phases of construction formation, subcontracts oversight, permitting, project execution, testing/inspection, and project closeout.

  • Prepares/approves purchase requisitions for construction materials, rental equipment, tools, and subcontractor services.

  • Ability to facilitate Installation Field Change Requests and documenting design change.

  • Participates in Constructability Teams as the Civil/Structural Field Representative.

  • TDEC TN Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Lvl 1 certificate.

  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent security clearance.

About Our Team:

Department 6529's primary mission is to provide enhanced security systems integration and support to DOE and NNSA sites and their customers. complexes. We are responsible for the design, testing and implementation of complex physical security systems to protect critical national security assets and defense capabilities. The department provides project management and subject matter experts for risk analysis, intrusion detection, video assessment, communications, entry control, alarm communication and display, and response force planning. These subject matter experts are developed internally with extensive hands-on training and external educational opportunities.
