What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Remote Field Engineering Technician to join our team supporting Sandia National Laboratories’ Tonopah Test Range (TTR).

The role requires an application-based understanding of radio frequency (RF), mechanical systems, optical sensors and systems, electrical control systems and their components, and communications, network, and data transmission fundamentals. Technicians are expected to troubleshoot discrete component technology, integrate current technology into legacy systems, develop procedures and documentation, and be able to set-up and calibrate equipment. The technician will work regularly with PC-based control systems, electric drive systems, synchro/servos, and data/video encoder systems. We seek a field-proven technician to join a multidisciplinary team that is designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs, homeland security, and nondefense applications. Tonopah Test Range engineering teams employ state-of-the-art technologies, including sophisticated software tools for design, analysis, modeling, and simulation.

The successful candidate will work with and support a dynamic group of field test support personnel to ensure the successful completion of Sandia National Laboratories flight test mission. Assisting in the development of future range processes and procedures is integral in the responsibilities of each team member. Each team member is responsible for following established range guidance to ensure that all compliance requirements regarding the operation, facilities and infrastructure are met with quality. Incorporation of all corporate safety and work planning processes are inherent in this activity. Must be capable of and demonstrate behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.

On any given day, as a Remote Field Engineering Technician, you may be called on to:

  • Operating, maintaining, upgrading, and troubleshooting a variety of RF, optical, and communications systems, supporting remote field testing as required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both as part of a team and independently in a dynamic work environment while demonstrating and maintaining professional work behaviors.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, and reports.

  • Ability and willingness to work under structured Work Planning & Controls process.

  • Ability to work under high-stress settings and meet tight deadlines.

  • Other functions may be included, as required by Range requirements.

  • Ability to report to work either directly to TTR outside of Tonopah, NV, or to a commuter vehicle in Las Vegas, NV for transport to TTR.

  • Must be willing and able to work a compressed 3- or 4-day schedule (14hr/14hr/12hr or 4/10hrs) while staying on-range during that time.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada.

Salary Range:

$65,300 - $125,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in operating and maintaining electro-mechanical systems and components.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with electrical and mechanical design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance.

  • Ability to read and understand schematics, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.

  • Ability to evaluate products and recommend solutions to problems affecting equipment.

  • Ability to conduct equipment performance tests and prepare reports.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Verifiable Vocational-Technical training in a relevant mechanical or electrical field, and/or an Associate’s degree in a relevant technical field.

  • Experience across a broad range of technical fields such as Radar, Telemetry, Communications and Photometrics.

  • Basic knowledge of project management principles.

  • Remote field test experience.

  • Current or prior DOE L or Q clearance (or DOD equivalent).

About Our Team:

Department 7235 is charged with the operation of Sandia National Laboratories’ Tonopah Test Range. The TTR team is responsible for planning and executing the Flight Test portion of the Stockpile Surveillance program. Additionally, a requirement exists to plan and execute tests in support of other Federal Agencies.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
