What Your Job Will Be Like:

The W87-1 Modification Program at Sandia National Laboratories is working with the NNSA, U.S. Air Force and other national labs to develop a ground-based strategic warhead that improves on the safety and security elements of legacy weapons in the U.S. nuclear stockpile. This program is a critical element in our nation’s nuclear deterrence strategy.

In this role, you may be responsible for generating and maintaining the non-nuclear derived system compatibility definition (CD), which is intended to be the main document that derives requirements from the Interface Control Documents and System CD and work in conjunction with design teams and surety teams to derive requirements to component product realization teams. Proven expert knowledge in requirements and the system design to provide a complete set of system requirements to all parties associated with the functionality of the W87-1 is critical. Be a part of direct involvement in all aspects of requirements management including testing, qualification, and verification. Collaboration and upward reporting to program leadership and Sandia’s executive management on metrics associated with requirements performance and/or exceptions. This amazing opportunity is located at our Livermore, CA location or Albuquerque, NM location.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Derive system requirements for components compatibility documents.

  • Derive and interpret shared requirements with Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL).

  • Collaborate regularly with the program’s leadership and Sandia’s executive management on metrics and burn down plans.

  • Prepare for and present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings.

  • Coordinate with teams to develop a detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific system aspects or components.

  • Attend technical meetings with the mechanical, electrical and qualification teams.

  • Work together with other system requirement engineers and/or component engineers, and provide technical mentorship on how to write appropriate requirements for verification.

  • Manage the requirements database objects for requirements traceability, orphan requirements and inconsistencies within requirements language.

  • Assist in integration activities with various teams and PRTs.

  • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams (i.e., NNSA, DoD, LLNL).

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in either Livermore, CA or Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position (up to 25%).

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related STEM field, plus (1) one year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus (5) five years of experience; OR equivalent related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above-stated field.

  • Experience working on nuclear weapons design, qualification, production, or related projects.

  • Proven ability to develop and lead large, cross-organization, multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience developing, negotiating, and communicating requirements for either Joint Test Assemblies or other nuclear weapon system-level designs.

  • At least 5 years of experience working on a PRT or within NW product realization framework.

  • Project management skills.

  • Experience with MBSE principles and implementation.

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment, and to work effectively with different levels of management, DoE/DoD partners, and Systems Leads.

  • Experience with Phase 6.X NSE program execution.

About Our Team:

The W87-1 System team is responsible for designing and qualifying the W87-1 warhead and for working with the Sentinel Missile System Project Officer (SPO) to integrate the warhead with the missile. The team comprises advanced-degree technical staff with backgrounds in electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering. Additionally, the team includes core partners in project management, reliability, quality, nuclear safety, surveillance, engineering sciences, and material sciences. The W87-1 system team collaborates closely with LLNL as Design Agencies for the program. The system team also participates in multiple subgroups supporting the USAF Project Officers Group (POG).
