Sandia National Laboratories W80-4 Nuclear Safety Systems Lead (Experienced) in Livermore, California

We are seeking a hardworking Lead Nuclear Safety (NS) Systems Engineer (job title: R&D S&E, Systems Engineering), with a background in mechanical, electrical, systems, or related engineering field to join the W80-4 System Team! The NS Systems Lead is responsible for leading Nuclear Safety development activities, including owning the final development of the W80-4 NS System architecture and NS Theme, working closely with the qualification teams, and overseeing development of component and subsystem requirements to ensure proper implementation in all W80-4 products. The NS Systems Lead has primary responsibility for interfacing with W80-4 design and production partners and customers on nuclear safety topics.

The Lead must have a multidisciplinary perspective with an innate curiosity to learn outside of their existing knowledge base. Having the capability to communicate optimally is a critical element for this position due to the collaborative nature of the role. On any given day, you may be called to:

  • Work with Weapon Systems Engineers (WSEs) to ensure successful product implementation for Nuclear Safety requirements
  • Coordinate with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on joint Nuclear Safety topics
  • Lead the nuclear safety portion of system design reviews, including the System Baseline Design Review (BDR), Final Design Review (FDR), and joint SNL/LLNL Nuclear Safety reviews
  • Represent systems in customer and management interactions (for example, the Air Force, NNSA, Chief Engineer for Nuclear Weapons) on nuclear safety and lead the response to requests
  • Coordinate with NS Assurance Lead, Surety Integration Lead, and assurance engineers
  • Lead NS trade studies, balancing performance, costs, risks, materials, functionalities, and technology maturation
  • Write position papers and memos on Nuclear Safety topics
  • Oversee nuclear safety qualification and test efforts
  • Prepare presentations and other supporting documentation needed for technical reviews
  • Represent the program while collaborating regularly with partners at Sandia, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense organizations.

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field plus 5 or more years of related experience or Master’s degree in relevant field plus 1 or more years of related experience; or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field; or equivalent engineering and scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Academic or job experiences in areas such as: engineering design, qualification, production, requirements development, or related modeling/simulation projects
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance

The various Systems Engineering Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Systems Engineering Center which is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
