W80-4 Environments Lead Systems Engineer (Mid-Career/Experienced)

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$116,600 - $229,500 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a hardworking Systems Engineer to join the W80-4 warhead Life Extension Program (LEP), for the Environments Lead role! This role is demanding, highly visible, and requires collaboration with a significant number of partners and Product Realization Teams (PRT) across the nuclear weapons complex as well as other NNSA sites. Strong critical thinking skills and effective communication skills are essential.

This role oversees a team of engineers that will work on different environmental requirements such as thermal, vibration, shock, EM, and other environments. The Lead regularly collaborates with other Sandia NM and Sandia CA organizations in supporting the program’s needs in terms of modeling/simulation, environmental test needs, and electrical and mechanical environments definition. This position is also directly involved in all aspects of the environmental specification management including testing, qualification and verification of requirements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Interpret and derive Stockpile to Sequence (STS) requirements for system and component requirements

• Negotiate, derive, and interpret shared requirements with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)

• Collaborate with modeling and simulation organizations for model optimization and test performance prediction

• Coordinate management of test specification documents

• Analyze test data and provide technical basis for qualification activities

• Prepare for and present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings

• Attend technical meetings with the mechanical, electrical and qualification teams

• Lead other team members in providing accurate, complete, testable data.

• Assist in integration activities with various teams and PRTs

• Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams such as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), LLNL, and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at either the NM or CA campus locations 100% of the time.

Qualifications We Require:

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field plus 8 or more years of related experience; or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Industrial Engineering plus 4 or more years of related experience; or equivalent related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development

• Experience working on nuclear weapons design, qualification, production, or related projects

• Ability and willingness to travel a few times a year

• Active DoE Q-level clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience writing requirements for either Joint Test Assemblies or other nuclear weapon system-level designs

• Project management experience

• Modeling experience

• Test article/test asset assembly experience

• Strong communication skills, including ability to present to large and diverse audiences

• Team focused with ability to collaborate with a variety of personalities

• Ability and willingness to obtain special program access

• Experience working with Earned Value Management

About Our Team:

The W80-4 System Integration Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Systems Engineering Center. The Weapon Systems Engineering Center is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The W80-4 System Integration Departments are comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers with advanced technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering. A major effort for this organization is the engineering design and development in support of a Life Extension Program for a nuclear warhead (W80-4). The W80-4 warhead will be deployed on the future U.S. Air Force Long Range Standoff (LRSO) cruise missile that will replace the existing Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM)/W80 Warhead weapon system in our nation's nuclear deterrent stockpile. This is a long term program that will require close collaboration with many different departments within Sandia as well as with organizations outside of Sandia such as LLNL, NNSA, Production Facilities, and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
