Sandia National Laboratories Test Engineer (Early/Mid-Career) in Livermore, California


We are looking for a test engineer to join our team and support qualification efforts for components being developed for a current Life Extension Program (LEP). This critical role will require an engineer to design and implement testing to demonstrate that product design intent will be met with ample margin. Test designs will be coordinated with a team of product fabrication and qualification engineers and will adhere to thoroughly vetted qualification process.

This position requires less than 25% time traveling to Albuquerque, NM and Kansas City, MO

We are looking for an engineer with:

  • Desire to work on a fast paced product development team
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and on multidisciplinary teams to ensure the needs of all stakeholders are being met
  • Experience planning, designing, coordinating, and overseeing test efforts
  • The ability to understand component requirements, and to design and implement specific tests to satisfy them and enable product qualification and acceptance
  • Strong background in data acquisition software (Labview) and data storage and parsing software (Matlab, Excel)


  • BS in engineering or physical science, plus 2 years of directly applicable experience or 4 years of general engineering experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance


  • MS or PhD in engineering or physical science
  • Experience writing test plans and designing test fixtures
  • Experience with shock, vibration, and thermal testing
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data
  • Active DOE Q Clearance
  • Experience coordinating multiple stakeholders (hardware, test facilities, customer etc)
  • Experience with data acquisition software (Labview or similar)
  • Experience with test data interpretation and analysis
  • Experience with product qualification processes, test scoping, execution, and documentation
  • Strong communication skills

Department Description:

The Weapons Subsystems 3 designs, prototypes and supports mechanical weapon subsystems for high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability. These projects support a broad mission space including assets that are critical to U.S. national security.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
