We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Manager to join our Next Generation Reentry Vehicle (NGRV) Systems team!

Working on NGRV, you’ll be part of an outstanding team that takes its national security mission to heart, helping make decisions that lay the foundation for a high-visibility, high-impact nuclear weapon modernization program. You’ll work in state-of-the-art facilities with talented people across the Nuclear Security Enterprise, addressing interesting challenges at every stage of design and development, and making lasting relationships that will continue throughout your career.

As an R&D Manager, you will be responsible for setting up the team and delivering on Phase 1 milestones for the next Air Force warhead development program, currently named Next Generation Reentry Vehicle (NGRV). You will lead and manage the NGRV Program to understand system requirements and conduct Trade Studies, while working with the NNSA and U.S. Air Force to develop weapon system architecture concepts in collaboration with other Design Laboratories (LLNL, LANL) as well as Production Agencies (KCNSC, Pantex, etc). This program is a critical element in our nation’s nuclear deterrence strategy.

As an R&D Manager, you will:

Lead

  • Lead and inspire the NGRV team to achieve program milestones with excellence and energy.

  • Develop and lead Nuclear Deterrence (ND) projects to support current and future work and customer needs.

  • Manage department and program resources, ensuring on-time and on-budget deliveries that meet programmatic objectives.

  • Ensure the team's vision is aligned with program objectives.

  • In this new role, lead and grow a new department. Oversee and manage approx. 4 to start while building the team of needed staff up to 10-12, coordinate recruitment, training, performance assessment, and other HR-related functions.

  • Effectively communicate program progress, milestones, and deliverables to various stakeholders across the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at Sandia.

  • Develop and articulate novel system concepts to stakeholders.

  • Establish internal partnerships with Advanced and Exploratory Systems departments and other organizations that focus on current and future programs as well as component and technology organizations that will contribute hardware to the program system design.

  • Establish and nurture relationships with internal and external customers to develop and execute new programs.

  • Build trust-based partnerships across Sandia and with external partners.

    Apply Your Technical Expertise

  • Apply your technical expertise in Nuclear Deterrence (ND) projects to support current and future work and customer needes

  • Appy your expertise in developing technologies for either nuclear or conventional weapon applications

  • Recognized as an indisputable expert and leader in the ND community including industry recognition and reputation. Has a demonstrated command for defining long term strategy

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM field plus 8 or more years of related technical experience.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q Security Clearance and other caveats.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master of Science degree in a STEM field plus 8 or more years of related technical experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing projects and leading diverse high-functioning, multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Knowledge and/or experience of system engineering concepts and principles

  • Experience with the Nuclear Deterrence programs.

  • Demonstrated commitment to value diversity and inclusion among the workforce .

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment, and to work effectively with different levels of management, DOE/DOD partners, and Systems Leads.

  • Experience with weapons technology testing and conducting demonstrations.

  • Analytical skills in understanding customer requirements and development work packages in support of their needs and expectations

  • Must be self-directed and customer focused with strong interpersonal, teaming, and leadership.

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling to large and diverse audiences.

About Our Team:

Next Generation Reentry Vehicle (NGRV) Systems team is developing transformational, threat-informed solutions that enable the Nuclear Security Enterprise to meet emerging national security needs with a responsive nuclear deterrent. Within our Center, we develop safe, secure, trusted, and mission-capable weapon designs and architectures. We partner internally and integrate across the Nuclear Security Enterprise to provide thorough, objective information to our nation’s decision makers. We do this through preparing for Programs of Record and Urgent Operational Needs, maintaining a systems and digital engineering capability, and cultivating national and international relationships.
