What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Laboratory Support Technologist to join a diverse team working on research activities led by scientists and engineers in the Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory (HEML). The HEML team designs, constructs, and operates a variety of systems to evaluate the properties of materials in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen environments. Technologists in our laboratory integrate subsystems for gas-handling of pressure environments, hydraulic mechanical controls, electrical diagnostics and controls, and data acquisition.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work both independently and as part of team on multiple HEML projects

  • Assemble experimental equipment, perform tests, and collect data at the direction of technical staff

  • Design, fabricate, and modify low- and high-pressure gas-handling systems

  • Conduct mechanical testing of materials exposed to high-pressure hydrogen. This includes developing procedures, analyzing results and preparing documentation on test results and conclusions.

  • Design and construct fixtures and test specimens

  • Partner with customers, facilities, service organizations, vendors and research collaborators (both internal and external)

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with pressure, vacuum, cryogenic, hydraulic systems, power tools

  • Experience with data acquisition systems, computer control systems or transducer electronics

  • Basic machining skills (e.g. experience with lathes, milling machines, EDMs)

  • Understanding of instrumentation used in mechanical testing (e.g., thermocouples, strain gauges)

  • Strong computer skills, including experience with data analysis and computer-aided design and drafting (e.g. experience with SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB)

  • Strong written and verbal communication

About Our Team:

The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation to advance the infrastructure necessary to promote the use of hydrogen and its isotopes in areas relevant to Sandia’s energy and nuclear deterrence missions. Staff conduct research that spans fundamental science to engineered materials in nationally recognized experimental facilities for hydrogen science. Focus areas include: fundamental understanding of material structure and behavior with respect to compatibility and aging in gaseous environments, scientific basis for hydrogen safety codes and standards, gas and liquid behavior for risk analysis, development of hybrid water splitting processes for hydrogen production, and solid-state and liquid hydrogen storage. This expertise is applied to hydrogen end-use (e.g. air, marine, rail) application feasibility and performance assessments with industry partners. More information on the Sandia Hydrogen program (https://energy.sandia.gov/programs/sustainable-transportation/hydrogen/) website.
