Are you passionate about materials science and do you dream of using innovative facilities to explore solutions? If so, consider applying to join our Materials team as a R&D Materials Scientist!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform pioneering experimental research in materials science to advance the state-of-knowledge in the development of science-based process-structure-properties-performance relationships of materials, with an emphasis on metals and alloys

  • Design and conduct laboratory experiments, particularly to understand microstructure and aging of conventional and additively-manufactured metals

  • Collaborate with a diverse team of fellow experimentalists, as well as engineers, theoreticians, machine learning experts, and others

  • Author and edit material specifications in support of our nuclear deterrent

  • Share scientific findings with the wider scientific community in conferences and peer-reviewed publications

    Required:

  • PhD in metallurgy, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field

  • A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications in the above areas within peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences

  • Ability to hold a Q-level security clearance

    Desired:

  • Previous experience supporting the Nuclear Security Enterprise

  • Laboratory experience characterizing the kinetics in metals, including through, e.g. thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS)

  • Experience with Granta MI or similar databases

  • Ability to design instruments for materials characterization, including safety planning

  • Deep understanding of physical and mechanical metallurgy

  • Documented experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and program development

    Department Description:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications. Projects and capabilities in the department's research portfolio include nanoporous materials for sensing, catalysis, energy harvesting, and gas storage; materials for energy and hydrogen storage; and nanoscale materials characterization including extensive electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation instrumentation, and X-ray diffraction.

Security Clearance:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
