Sandia National Laboratories Postdoctoral Appointee - Laser Experimentation in Livermore, California

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Are you passionate about your work and want to utilize state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves significant issues for our nation's security?

The Materials Physics team is seeking a motivated postdoctoral experimentalist appointee to advance the development of a scanning ultrafast electron microscope (SUEM) for studying carrier transport in electronic devices and materials.

On any given day, you will:

  • Collaborate with researchers on customization of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) through the integration of an ultrafast pump-probe laser setup, development of custom electron detectors, and application of the microscope to build a fundamental understanding of electronic and thermal transport in emerging nanoelectronics.

You will be expected to present results at national/international meetings and to publish research in high profile peer-reviewed journals.

You have the following:

  • PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience with laser experimentation, ideally ultrafast pump-probe methods

You also have one, or more, of the following:

  • Solid background in optics, instrumentation, microscopy, and electronics
  • Ability to address complex problems creatively, and to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with other researchers.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences, consisting of a minimum of three (3) first-author or co-authored scientific publications
  • Some experience in microscopy, ideally SEM
  • Experience with electron/ion optics
  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, SIMION, and 3D CAD

Department Description:

The Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic-scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites; electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid-state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national defense.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a DOE security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance must be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
