Sandia National Laboratories Mechanical Engineer (Early/Mid-Career) in Livermore, California

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to work in a multidisciplinary team environment in designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs, homeland security, and non-defense applications. The candidate will work with a wide variety of technical staff including electrical engineers, designers, analysts, materials scientists, fabrication specialists, test personnel as well as program/project managers. The items being developed include electronics devices and mechanical structures for those electronics products. The candidate should be familiar with software tools for design, analysis, and modeling/simulation. Mechanical engineering areas of emphasis include design, applied mechanics, product qualification, and advanced materials.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Evaluate mechanical design definitions for feasibility, manufacturability, and assembly

  • Work integrally and engage with related organizations to negotiate requirements and constraints

  • Perform various simulations (i.e. structural, thermal, analytical, etc.) to prove mechanical robustness

  • Conduct material and manufacturing process evaluations

  • Complete stack-up tolerance analyses

  • Convey design intent to other agencies thru proper GD&T implementation and inspection/acceptance criteria

  • Develop test plans to validate design characteristics and oversee testing

  • Partner with our production agency to mature design for manufacturability


  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

  • Ability to travel


  • Active DOE Q clearance

  • 2 years’ previous experience in mechanical engineering product development

  • Experience with Creo, Pro/Engineer, or SolidWorks

  • The ability to create innovative solutions to difficult technical problems

  • Works well in team-oriented environment and work cooperatively with other internal organizations, as well as external production facilities and suppliers

Security Clearance:
