What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an engineer to join our Handling and Test Gear (H&T-Gear) Engineering Group (8448)! Our team develops and maintains Handling and Test Gear for DoD use in the field. The ideal candidate will have experience designing, building and testing mechanical hardware and can expect to work with a team of engineers to take designs from idea through production.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Design a critical piece of H or T gear
Build prototypes of your designs
Review and redline drawings
Develop and execute tests to verify your designs
Resolve production challenges
Partner with engineers at Sandia and across the complex to ensure the success of the project
Qualifications We Require:
Masters degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Hands on design and/or manufacturing internship or extracurricular activity (e.g. Labs, clubs etc)
Ability to travel up to 25%
Ability to obtain a Q-Clearance and Sigma 15 access
Qualifications We Desire:
Experience designing mechanical hardware, including machined and/or welded assemblies, fixtures, tooling, handling gear etc.
Experience with computer aided design tools (Creo/ProE, SolidWorks etc.)
Experience getting hardware manufactured and working through production challenges
Experience building and assembling hardware you designed
1-3 years relevant work experience
Electrical engineering experience
Experience creating, interpreting, and reviewing drawings, including GD&T
Environmental testing experience (writing test plans, data acquisition, executing tests)
Familiarity with computational simulation and modeling tools
Excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling
About Our Team:
Sandia/California’s Handling Gear Engineering Department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems to support the Nuclear Weapons Program. Our group is responsible for handling gear, test gear, and weapon container development; certification; and stockpile support for all weapons in the nuclear stockpile. These responsibilities include ensuring that every weapon and weapon subsystem is managed and transported in a safe and secure manner according to recognized standards. With over 15 active projects supporting every major Life Extension Program and Alteration, combined with more than 220 fielded pieces of H-Gear supporting the active stockpile, the H-Gear team provides a continuously challenging, rewarding and dynamic work environment. The various Components & Systems Engineering Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Engineering Centers which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The departments are comprised of groups of dedicated and motivated engineers with technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering.
