Sandia National Laboratories Information Security Data Scientist in Livermore, California

Salary Range:

$113,500 - $223,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Information Security Data Scientist (R&D Mathematics Statistician) for our Information Security Science group to perform statistical analysis and methodology development. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary learning algorithms team committed to solving the information security challenges facing our nation in a wide range of activities that span mission domains from cybersecurity to nuclear deterrence and nonproliferation. Activities will include ideation, applied research and development of prototypical learning algorithms, instructing, and publishing.

To support Sandia's national security missions, our information security scientists and engineers engage in several research areas including:

+ + Counter-Adversarial analysis; Adversarial aware analytics

  • Game Theoretic formulation of decision-making problems and UQ of them; Learning within constrained resources (including sparse data)

  • Data curation, data set collection/generation and experiment design, data privacy

  • Cognitive and human-computer interface; interpretability, information integrity; trusted AI

  • Graphs & Networks, Relational data analysis, patterns, feature identification

  • Programmatic development across national security partners and government agencies

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in Applied Math or Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Cybersecurity, plus bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM field, or Equivalent scientific or engineering experience in lieu of degrees that demonstrates knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development

  • A minimum of two years relevant research experience (e.g., as a graduate research assistant) or one year of professional engineering or scientific experience

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, optimization, uncertainty quantification, feature identification techniques, graphs and network science, scalable file analysis

  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences

  • Experience leading projects

  • Software development experience and fluency in two of the following: Python, Java, C and C+

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE-Q

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A background in solving practical problems that involve encounters with real-world data

  • Proven cybersecurity and information security domain experience, such as in secure learning algorithms methods advancement.

  • Experience working in software development teams

  • Proven research community leadership through activities such as participation in student or professional organizations, outreach activities, etc.

  • Related professional experience such as internships in industry or at other national labs, participation in visiting research programs, etc.

  • Familiarity with secure-system design principles and software assurance principles

  • Well-developed leadership skills with the proven ability to prioritize and execute in a disciplined and focused manner

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely as well as how experience has shaped your skillset

Security Clearance:
