Sandia National Laboratories High Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Engineer (Early Career) in Livermore, California

We are seeking an experienced an IT Computing Infrastructure/High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer to manage mid-sized computational clusters and storage arrays. This role offers the exciting opportunity to collaborate directly with researchers on the optimization of computational jobs and management of massive amounts of experimental data.

This position is responsible for the design, purchase, and installation of new compute clusters as well as the operation of existing clusters including hardware, software, account management, and fulfillment of cyber security requirements. The successful candidate will rely on a strong foundation in Linux and will bring a passion for learning new things in support of important research in chemical reactions, combustion, engines, and reacting flow science.

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; or eight years' relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience maintaining high-performance computing clusters
  • Solid understanding of Linux operating systems (RHEL, Centos, Ubuntu)
  • Knowledge of hardware and operating systems, including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client–server principles

  • Ability to hold a U.S. DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

  • Experience operating in a scientific computing environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience maintaining system software, including performing software builds, software upgrades, and patch installation as needed
  • Experience with disk and storage systems, such as host-based RAID controllers, software RAID and vendor RAID systems (Network Appliance, LSI, DDN)
  • Batch cluster resource management: Torque, SLURM, PBS, etc.

Department Description:

The Plasma & Reacting Flow Science department at Sandia primarily works on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science to address needs surrounding both high temperature and low temperature plasma phenomena, combusting flows, reacting gas-solid interfaces, uncertainty quantification (UQ), and related topics such as scientific machine learning. We operate state-of-the-art experimental laboratories, conduct work at the DIII-D tokamak reactor, and utilize both local computer clusters and the DOE Leadership Class supercomputers to conduct massively parallel simulations.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
