Sandia National Laboratories Facilities Mechanical Engineer (Mid-Career) in Livermore, California

We are looking for a dedicated and energetic individual to join our Facilities team. We have opportunities in several areas of our organization including engineering, operations, planning, and project execution for a person with mechanical engineering or project management experience. Our fast paced, National Laboratory setting necessitates that the candidate have the ability to deal with ambiguity and variability of assignment and accept the value of being in a service group. We seek a well-rounded individual, adept at problem solving in a variety of settings.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assess mechanical building system and site infrastructure issues, conceptualize potential solutions, make recommendations, and develop project plans

  • Perform engineering analysis, calculations, and develop construction drawings and specifications sufficient to define systems for modification

  • Create long-term capital improvement plans and develop work packages for building and site utility systems

  • Provide technical direction for building and utility systems, provide studies and analysis for mechanical systems and provide technical guidance for operations, energy efficiency, conservation, and optimization

  • Review plans for modifications and improve cost effectiveness and customer satisfaction

  • Review and enhance preventive maintenance procedures on mechanical system assets

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant field plus five or more years of relevant experience

  • Experience performing designs or operating potable water systems, piping and plumbing systems, specialized gas piping, heating and air conditioning systems and controls, and/or other site infrastructure

  • Knowledge and understanding of current International Building Code (IBC) and California Mechanical, Plumbing, Building, and Energy Efficiency Codes

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

    Desired:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer license (PE) in the State of California or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire

  • Detailed knowledge of HVAC industry and ability to produce specifications for bid purposes

  • Ability to think critically and make decisions requiring engineering judgment

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with California Building Codes (CBC)

  • Proven experience designing/operating building fire protection systems

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion

  • PMP certification from the Project Management Institute or demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept through design and construction

  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization with both internal and external customers

  • Knowledge / experience in facilities design, construction, and O&M industry best practices and standards

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional

    Department Description:

The Partnership and Planning Department supports the mission by establishing long range planning & investment strategies and implementation plans. The team develops and maintains effective strategic customer partnerships and integrates F&I plans into the investment and planning strategies. The team also provides space management, condition, and energy assessments of the facilities and site infrastructure.

Security Clearance:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
