What Your Job Will Be Like:

The W87-1 System team is at the forefront of a program to modernize the W87-1, a replacement for the W78 warhead. Plans call for fielding the W87-1 on the Department of Defense's (DoDs) new United States Air Force (USAF) Sentinel missile within the Mk21A Reentry Vehicle (RV), two major USAF acquisition programs in concurrent development with the W87-1.

We are seeking an Electrical Systems Engineer / Flight Test Vehicle (FTV) Electrical Engineer to join the W87-1 Systems team! You will be supporting system-level electrical integration, assembly, and testing for W87-1 Flight Test Vehicles (FTVs) from Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA including environmental Flight Test Units (EFTUs) and Developmental Joint Test Assembly 10s (DJTA10s).

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan and/or support electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, functional testing, acceptance testing, and electrical integration testing.

  • Partner with components, Systems, test teams, and test facilities.

  • Support pre-flight assembly activities at Vandenberg Space Force Base, coordinate receipt of flight test data, process and distribute data to stakeholders.

  • Support data processing of flight test data via the Sandia ground station.

  • Support Air Force discussions, system-level and component requirements, system-level reviews, and ground testing.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Livermore, CA. Some travel will be required for this position (up to 25%).

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field; OR Master’s degree in stated field, plus (3) years of experience; OR Bachelor's degree in stated field, plus (5) five years of experience.

  • 2 years of experience contributing within a Systems Engineering or Component team on a Modernization, Advanced & Exploratory, Stockpile, or a related/equivalent DoD program.

  • Experience in engineering design, qualification, RF systems, or testing.

  • The ability to obtain a US DoE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above-stated field.

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced and multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Experience working on warhead systems or component requirements, design, qualification, or EMC analysis.

  • Experience with Phase 6.X NSE or DoD 5000 program execution.

  • Familiarity with engineering tools and languages such as PSpice, Cadence/OrCAD, DxDesigner, Altium, MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW, C/C++ and Python.

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to build and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

  • Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter in an ambiguous environment.

  • Active US DoE Q-level security clearance or DoD TS-level clearance.

About Our Team:

The W87-1 System team is responsible for designing and qualifying the W87-1 warhead and for working with the Sentinel missile System Project Officer (SPO) to integrate the warhead with the missile. The team comprises advanced-degree technical staff with backgrounds in electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering. Additionally, the team includes core partners in project management, reliability, quality, nuclear safety, surveillance, engineering sciences, and material sciences. The W87-1 system team collaborates closely with LLNL as Design Agencies for the program. The system team also participates in multiple subgroups supporting the USAF Project Officers Group (POG).
