Bidder Eligibility:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Level promotions (Member to Senior) may be permitted, but are not guaranteed, on this requisition.

Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. If so, the Digital Systems Security Engineering team has multiple openings for highly motivated and hardworking Systems Security Engineers passionate about the security and assurance of digital systems for our nuclear deterrent mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop systems security requirements and digital assurance plans.

  • Support implementation of digital assurance, risk assessment, and security plans

  • Conduct system-level security risk assessment and provide guidance and recommendations

  • Identify digital assurance and security gaps and vulnerabilities

  • Derive and translate security requirements for system/product design and engineering team

  • Coordinate digital assurance and systems security engineering activities

  • Develop innovative security solutions with acceptable risk tolerance

  • Develop applicable Nuclear Deterrent Program level digital assurance policies and requirements.

  • Support risk management framework activities for Nuclear Deterrent digital systems

  • Build security control libraries for Nuclear Deterrent programs.

  • Develop test tools and strategies for digital assurance and cybersecurity testing

  • Document and communicate analysis results effectively to technical and non-technical user groups in written and oral formats

  • Gather, organize and present information requested for internal and external security data calls.

  • Champion security best practices and serve as a security subject matter expert for digital system teams

    The preferred work location for this position is Livermore, California. However, the selected applicant can also work in Albuquerque, NM. This position is eligible for some telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Assurance, or related subject area; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master’s degree in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Assurance, or related subject area

  • 5 plus years of relevant work experience

  • Experience with Systems Security Engineering concept and have digital assurance experience, preferably with DoD platform security, hardware design and embedded systems security

  • Experience in developing security plans and/or performing cyber security assessments for non—traditional (non-IT) digital systems

  • Experience with the development and/or testing and evaluating of digital systems for security and reliability

  • Knowledge and experience of DOE/NNSA and/or DoD cyber security orders and policies; relevant federal and private standards and requirements (e.g., NIST, ISO, CNSS, etc.); and understanding of the Risk Management Framework (RMF) as documented in various NIST publications

  • Experience with security requirements implementation for hardware, software or firmware

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in drafting policies, reports and other documentation

  • Familiarity with security best-practices, standards and guides in defense, automotive, or aviation industries

  • Experience with Model-Base Systems Engineering process and tools

  • Experience in hardware systems engineering, hardware/software security architecture, platform security, hardware development, applied cryptography, authentication and protocols, systems engineering

  • Excellent self-initiative and self-motivation with the ability to work under minimal supervision

  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance

About Our Team:

The Cyber Risk & Security department resides within the Reliability & Digital Assurance group, and is the home of the Nuclear Deterrence Digital Systems Security team. The department provides digital-system security expertise and analysis for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) system and component design, verification, and assessment. We partner with ND programs to assure digital specification, verification, and reliability considerations are well informed regarding cyber security issues and risks. We partner with departments across the Reliability & Digital Assurance group, as well as with cyber security researchers across Sandia's NM and CA sites and externally, to support ND cyber security needs and to remain cognizant of and contribute to cutting edge digital security research. We conduct research and develop digital-security methods and tools for ND applications, with an emphasis on embedded systems. Staff also serve as local domain experts for SNL/CA ND systems and components organizations.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
