NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$101,400 - $201,400 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a data scientist (R&D S&E, Computer Science) with a background in computer science, applied math, and information sciences to join our team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work as part of a technical team conducting innovative research in foundational or applied data science

  • Apply data science capabilities to scientific and engineering applications relevant to Sandia's diverse mission space

  • Publish outstanding new developments in peer-reviewed scientific journals

  • Contribute to the development of open-source software

  • Provide technical, programmatic, and operational leadership for National Security Programs

  • Interact and engage with a diverse set of colleagues

    The selected applicant can be a virtual worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. However, monthly travel to your assigned work location is required.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or a related engineering or science subject area

  • Publication record indicative of relevant research expertise

  • Software development experience in C++, C, in addition to Java, Matlab, R, Python, Julia or related languages

  • Demonstrated expertise in methods or applications in one or more of the following areas: counter adversarial machine learning, adversarial machine learning, uncertainty quantification of machine learning

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level and SCI-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

  • A background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real-world data

  • Ability to work in collaborative, interdisciplinary research environments on problems comprising diverse application domains

  • Experience in high-performing, distributed, or parallel computing

  • Proven research community leadership through activities such as participation in professional organizations

  • Related professional experience such as work experience or internships in the tech industry, other national laboratories, applied research, or participation in visiting research programs, etc.

About Our Team:

The Secure Learning Algorithms Department advances methods and applications of machine learning, data analysis, and numerical and discrete algorithms, and serves to test and evaluate algorithms for verification and security. The department holds expertise in linear algebraic, matrix and tensor methods, graphs and network science, adversary-aware analytics, and decision-making formulations. Supporting Sandia's Science, Engineering, and Mission partners by enabling uncertainty quantification on extraction of critical insights from data simulations, and experiments, these capabilities complement and leverage existing research in other Sandia organizations. The team generates publications as well as prototypical software analysis tools. Our efforts impact a wide range of domains ranging from national security applications to basic and applied research.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
