Sandia National Laboratories Data Science Computational Thermal Fluid Mechanical Engineer (Early/Mid-Career) in Livermore, California
We are seeking a technical staff member who will collaborate to perform thermal, fluid dynamics and/or reacting material (solid decomposition, gas phase combustion, fire) research, development, modeling, and simulation to support a variety of projects (e.g. nuclear safety and design and energy related research). The successful candidate will use and potentially develop state-of-the-art tools to conduct machine learning, data science, and uncertainty quantification techniques on computational simulations for one or more of the following application areas: fluid dynamics, turbulent flow, multiphase flow, conductive, convective, radiative transport, multiphysics thermal-mechanical, reacting flow, porous media flow and heat transfer, and thermal decomposition.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Apply and develop uncertainty quantification techniques
- Work closely with teams of code developers, analysts, and experimentalists to provide validated results of complex and challenging problems
- Work on several different projects concurrently and across many diverse teams
- Collaborate and interact closely with engineers and other researchers and analysts across the laboratory at both the California and New Mexico sites.
- Master's degree, or higher, in mechanical, chemical, aerospace engineering or closely related field (applied math, etc)
- Strong educational background in ONE or more of the following areas: heat transfer (including conduction, convection and radiation), fluid dynamics, reacting materials/chemistry/combustion
- Experience with modeling and simulation tools (e.g., the finite-element method); ability to assess tool capabilities and limitations when selecting the appropriate methodology for model development and simulation
- Experience with data science, machine learning, statistical methods and/or uncertainty quantification techniques;
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance
- Ph.D. degree in mechanical, chemical, aerospace engineering or closely related field (applied math, etc)
- Demonstrated ability to: learn and apply new technical areas; work collaboratively in a team environment;and, present and publish research findings and make original contributions to engineering science;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated experience in: analysis or code development for engineering sciences applications and high performance computing; programming proficiency (e.g. C++, python, Fortran, C); multiphase flow; and GPUs
Sandia California's Thermal/Fluid Science and Engineering Department is a diverse multidisciplinary community of engineers and researchers who specialize in computational fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer. The work mix in the group includes theory and modeling, scientific and high-performance computing, and applied engineering analysis of experiments and mechanical designs. The group is committed to two primary roles in science-based engineering at Sandia: (1) developing new computational methods and tools to describe fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and reacting materials; (2) performing computational analysis to predict the design performance of engineered systems in defense, energy, and industry applications. Recent activities within the group include combustion and heat transfer modeling, multiphase and porous media flow modeling, turbulent heat transfer modeling, and modeling and simulation of hydrogen and natural gas storage systems, algae production, wind turbine blades, and other energy systems.
