Sandia National Laboratories Civil and Structural Engineer, Facilities (Experienced) in Livermore, California
We seek an individual adept at problem solving and in a variety of settings. Successful candidates will have the demonstrated ability to assess system and infrastructure issues, conceptualize potential solutions, make recommendations and develop project plans. Qualified candidates will also have the ability and experience necessary to perform engineering analysis, calculations and develop project drawings and specifications sufficient to define site systems for modification by external contractors. Candidates will be familiar with State of California Building Codes as well as experience in the design of potable water, sewer, stormwater & drainage, and roadways.
Researches, analyzes, models, designs, plans, tests, and operates civil, structural, and infrastructure systems. Utilizes and integrates advanced design concepts relating to transportation, paving, traffic control, parking, gates, fences, drainage, soils, water supply, storm water conveyance, natural gas, communication systems, wastewater conveyance and treatment, site development, landscape, structures, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), seismic, construction, and construction management. Develops structural engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications involving metals, non-metallic, pre-cast and cast in place concrete, or composite materials for building and infrastructure construction and operations.
Primary Job Duties
Develops and provides technical system requirements for both design and operation of civil, structural, and infrastructure systems. Designs, or oversees design, for civil, structural, and utility components, systems, and products and integrates these to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations; compliance with code and contractual requirements; and performance-based design and customer requirements. Provides computerized modeling, analyzes data, and ensures reliability through obsolescence- and reliability-centered planning of large complex systems, underground and overhead utility systems, hydrology models, flood models, constructability expert systems, traffic models, and structural and aboveground utility load models. Analyzes, researches, and develops engineering calculations and specifications for building and site infrastructure systems including steel frame, concrete masonry unit (CMU), steel stud, metal deck, precast and cast-in-place concrete, asphalt, and metal and poly-pipe systems for mechanical, electrical, and utility designs. Researches and tests new and innovative techniques and equipment to save water and reduce costs in utility and building systems. Analyzes and maintains seismic site classifications for the Sandia National Laboratories? New Mexico site. Assesses capabilities and condition of existing civil, structural, and utility structures, components, equipment, and systems, and makes recommendations for improvements. Performs systems analyses of building and infrastructure systems and subsystems. Performs investigative analyses to determine causes and origins of civil, structural, or utility system failures. Develops and applies inspection and acceptance procedures for systems and components. Develops and coordinates utility outages and procedures. Maintains compliance with code, contractual, performance-based design, and customer requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Developed knowledge of engineering, geography, geology, soils, mechanics, structures, statics, dynamics and load analysis, hydrology, environmental sciences, traffic engineering and safety, fluid mechanics, open channel flow, geotechnology, and materials properties. Knowledge of dynamics, mechanics, statics, stability, stress fatigue, load, and thermal analysis. Ability to use a variety of engineering software applications. Ability to understand, interpret, and implement technical documents. Able to obtain a Professional Engineer license. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting worker safety, system energy efficiency, and reliability. Ability to maintain and assess the condition of infrastructure assets, including pavement management, traffic control, road maintenance, building, structural, and utility systems. Broad knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, codes, and standards related to civil and structural engineering and utility operations. Able to maintain site-wide maintenance and management plans and operational requirements related to seismic site classifications, cranes, hoists, elevators, pavements, storm drains, sanitary sewers, water, and natural gas systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural engineering plus 5 years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree plus 2 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Excellent communications skills
- Ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization with both internal and external customers
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks simultaneously
- Experience performing structural and/or civil designs for building systems, site sewer, water and drainage infrastructure and roadways
- Ability to manage projects from concept through design and construction
- In-depth knowledge and experience with California Building Codes and California environmental regulations
- Professional Engineer license (PE) in the State of California
- Valid PMP certification from the Project Management Institute
