NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Salary Range:
$101,400 - $201,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a Geosciences Engineer (Job Title: R&D S&E, Geosciences Engin SE) to join Sandia's Repository Performance organization at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Be a principal investigator of both computational analysis and field research for our organization
Undertake creative work, making systematic use of investigation or experimentation, to discover or revise historical knowledge of the Delaware Basin geology/hydrology/geochemistry, and use this knowledge to devise new applications
Create new understandings and capabilities through the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and analysis/evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods
Plan, conceive, conduct, and/or manage geo-hydrology research and development for Sandia's customers and sponsors
Direct systematic studies that lead to a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of hydrologic phenomena to achieve scientific objectives through the discovery of new scientific approaches or applications
Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research
Perform analyses under a rigorous quality assurance regime
Undertake development and possible technology transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology to support and expand hydrology research
This position requires the selected candidate to reside near, and to work in, Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Qualifications We Require:
Master’s in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Geology, Geo-Science or a closely related field, plus at least five years of related experience, or a PhD in a relevant field and one year of related experience
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Experience with aquifer testing, hydrologic analyses, hydrologic modeling, field data acquisition, design of experiments, and data analysis
Experience with carbonate geological systems
Experience with hydrogeology and geophysics in complex heterogeneous aquifer systems
Working knowledge of the following:
hydrological data acquisition and analysis in a field-to-product model workflow
traditional, pneumatic, and slug testing and accompanying analyses
geophysical methods, data acquisition and data interpretation
well test analysis software (nSIGHTS, Aqutesolv) and hydrologic modeling code/software (Modflow, GMS, PEST)
Demonstrated expertise in organizing task lists for multiple projects, electronic data entry and record keeping, data analysis under rigorous quality assurance program
Demonstrated experience in leading and managing R&D projects and their deliverables
Demonstrated excellence in the technical field, excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrated interpersonal skills including respectful teamwork and communication
Ability to contribute to advancing operation of standard field testing and data acquisition

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic waste. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership, LLC, under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, on- going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements, and optimization of the national transuranic waste complex. The Repository Performance Department, part of Sandia's Defense Waste Management Programs Group, provides the experimental and fieldwork capability needed to assist CBFO in assuring continued and uninterrupted certification and permitting of WIPP.
