What Your Job Will Be Like:
Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to study fusion and high energy density science in the laboratory? Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security?
The Pulsed Power Sciences Center is seeking a dynamic Research and Development Manager to push the state of the art in x-ray diagnostics and cryogenics capabilities for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density (HED) physics experiments on the Z Facility. You will manage the Xray Diagnostics and Experimental Systems organization (1681), a department composed of physicists, engineers, and technologists with a focus on the development and operation of instrumentation for x-ray measurements, cryogenic cooling, and gas-fill systems on the Z Facility in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program.
Primary Duties will be:
Management of the personnel in the organization by fostering a diverse work environment and ensuring a culture that promotes safety and security
Recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, and work assignments of personnel in the organization
Management of x-ray diagnostic, cryogenics, and gas-fill operations on the Z Facility
Management of the $6-7M/yr Diagnostics and Instrumentation sub-program of the ICF program at Sandia
Annual development and daily management of the >$20M/yr Z Diagnostics budget area in Center 1600
Are you ready for your next challenge? Join our team and achieve your dreams while making a difference!
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
Master's Degree degree in physical sciences or engineering/STEM and eight years of experience
Experience managing technology development projects and/or experimental campaigns
Experience with activity-level work in a laboratory setting
Good communication skills demonstrated through invited presentations at national scientific or engineering conferences
Active DoE Q Security Clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience
Experience with instrumentation for scientific measurements and/or cryogenic cooling technologies
Experience interacting with the NNSA
About Our Team:
The X-Ray Diagnostics & Experimental Systems department develops and maintains state-of-the-art x-ray diagnostics and experimental sub-systems for high-energy-density science experiments on the Z Facility. The experimental sub-systems within the department consist of Gas Fill and Cryogenics. The department also develops and maintains multi-year strategies for diagnostics and experimental capabilities (primarily for Z), while working closely with internal and external stakeholders. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
