NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$101,400 - $201,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

We are seeking multiple experienced Weapon Systems Engineers (WSE) to join the largest program at Sandia, the W80-4 Life Extension Program! The WSE is a key interface between Product Realization Teams (PRTs) and the Systems team. The WSE advocates for both their assigned component(s) and the warhead system. The WSE ensures the scope and requirements for their component(s) are defined and validated with stakeholders, the design and integration activities are managed within cost and schedule, and the product(s) as-built meets requirements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as the primary interface between Systems and the PRT.

  • Decompose higher level requirements and allocate appropriately to component(s). Coordinate requirement negotiations between systems and component(s).

  • Flow all System guidance to PRTs and provide feedback to Systems for continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with other WSEs to work component interfaces.

  • Understand component technical design, design trades and strategies for development, qualification, and production.

  • Understand component and system level risks and handling plans associated with assigned components.

  • Participate in and contribute to PRT activities. Understand PRT status, successes, emerging concerns, etc.

  • Dry-run design and production readiness review materials with PRT before delivery.

  • Attend PRT meetings, reviews, and review board (Risk Review Board, Change Control Board, etc.) meetings when PRT is on the agenda.

  • Inform Systems of PRT status and issues and solicit aid as needed

  • Decompose and own system level requirements and allocate appropriately to component(s).

  • Develop and negotiate change control documents with NSE stakeholders to drive decisions.

  • Understand PRT schedules, hardware deliveries and test plans supporting system and component qualification and full rate production. When deliverables are late, understand estimates for expected completion/delivery and enable recovery plans.

  • Review component test and qualification plans. Consult with quality to understand potential pitfalls and assist PRT in root cause analysis when failures occur and the development of resolution plans.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite occasionally to support classified meetings as needed.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus eight (8) years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience

  • Ability to obtain a US DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience working with NSE laboratories and plants including Pantex, KCNSC, and LLNL and KCNSC/NMO

  • Experience in the design, development, qualification, or production of Nuclear Weapon Systems

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and complete tasks in a fast-paced high-pressure environment

  • Experience in technical program/project management functions, including defining program work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines; and managing change control and risk

  • Experience in working with Production Agencies and ensuring components enter full rate production

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly written reports and deliver well-articulated briefings

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse teams across multiple geographic locations

The W80-4 NM Systems Engineering Team partners with Groups 8240 and 8260 at SNL/CA on W80-4 program scope. This organization supports the ND Weapon Systems Engineering Centers, which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of US nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The organization is comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated technologists and engineers, primarily in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Systems Engineering. The W80-4 program is currently entering into Phase 6.4, Production Engineering.

Security Clearance:
