What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an R&D, S&E Electrical Engineering researcher with technical expertise in high voltage sciences. You will be called upon to support lightning, high energy electrical breakdown, electrostatic discharge (ESD) low energy electrical breakdown experiment design & execution, and advanced research.
This position requires familiarity with and use of fundamental concepts, practices, procedures for high voltage and high voltage effects. In addition, this role includes responsibility for leading test execution, advancing research, and serving as a point of contact for customers/partners from SNL, LLNL, LANL, Pantex and other National Laboratories.
Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:
Leading the design, execution, and analysis of low energy breakdown and ESD experiments.
Leading the design, execution, and analysis of severe lightning testing and experiments.
Performing experimental design, fabrication, execution, analysis, and reporting.
Collaborating with customers to ensure experimental quality in design, execution and analysis
Advancing the performance of the Sandia lightning and ESD facilities.
Promoting critical facilities through tours, collaborations, and conference presentations.
Engineering opportunities are available in the Electrostatic Discharge Lab or the Sandia Lightning Simulator Lab
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$109,300 - $217,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
Bachelor’s AND Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or relevant STEM field
Two years’ relevant experimental engineering or science experience
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or STEM field.
Demonstrated experimental research involving lightning or high energy electrical breakdown
Demonstrated experimental research involving ESD or low energy electrical breakdown
Experience simulating low and high energy electrical breakdown
Ability to work as part of a dynamic team with agile responsiveness to evolving priorities
Experience leading and completing multiple programs and projects.
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external sponsors
Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple simultaneous tasks
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Demonstrated experience publishing conference or journal papers
Computer proficiency in Matlab, Excel, Word, MS Project, Powerpoint
About Our Team:
The Electrical Sciences department (Org 01331) is responsible for defining and managing deliverables for the weapon systems electromagnetic qualification programs as well as development of new programs. Our capabilities include electrostatic discharge, lightning/electrical breakdown, plasma physics, electromagnetics, the design and manufacture of advanced power electronics, advanced controls, and the development and analysis of advanced materials and components. The department works closely with other talented and highly motivated organizations such as 1324 (EM Theory), 1313 (Electrical Systems and Qualifications) and collaborates with Centers 2000, 5000, and 8000. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.
