We are seeking a Team Lead to lead the Z Pulsed Power Systems organization! As the team lead you will lead multiple operations teams that are integral to the daily operation of Sandia’s Z Machine. You will have the opportunity to lead daily operations and maintenance of the Z Machine’s pulsed power systems and supporting infrastructure, mentor and train a committed technologist workforce, and help ensure that the Z Experimental Capability Management Group is prepared to support the pulsed power science center’s science and national security mission.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Manage resources and assignments in partnership with Department Manager and operations team members to ensure:
Readiness and personnel availability for Z Machine shot activities
Timing and execution of Z Machine preventative maintenance
Planning and implementation of operations team member development, training and cross training.
Provide regular status to the Department Manager using information developed in collaboration with operations team regarding work activity progress, concerns, and issues in addition to system and/or process areas for improvements.
Coordinate support provided to Z machine operations and maintenance in strong partnership with groups 1650 and 1690 in addition to partners form across the center and lab.
In collaboration with the 1600 management team,
Develop long-term work activity plans for operation procedures, staffing and funding needs.
Develop and implement plans to improve system diagnostics and engineering projects.
Coordinate machine & equipment enhancements/upgrades in conjunction with Department Manager.
Develop timelines for and schedule preventive maintenance of equipment and Z machine systems operated by the Z Machine Infrastructure & Ops Department.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM field and 5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Two years or more of experience with testing, research, and/or development in an operations setting
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia National Laboratories' core values
Experience with pulsed power systems
Knowledge of Sandia National Laboratories’ Leadership model and demonstration of its principles
Experience in work planning and control to execute projects safely and securely
Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and complete multiple programs in parallel
Excellent oral and written communication skills and customer service skills, including the ability to build and manage effective working relationships
Ability to mentor employees on tasks and organizational requirements
Ability to work with sensitive information and classified matter
The Z Machine Infrastructure & Ops Department (01672) is responsible for ensuring that Sandia’s Z Machine is ready and configured to support the nation’s High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) stockpile stewardship and other national security missions as the world’s most powerful pulsed power driver. This team works together to prepare the machine for daily operation according to the requested experiment specifications and ensure that all the pulsed power and supporting systems are maintained. Once an experiment is loaded, the team readies and fires the machine and ensures that all the requested waveforms are captured and processed for further scientific analyses. This team is highly adaptable and dynamic because of the developmental nature of many of the experiments, and the fact that Z supports Materials Science, Radiation Physics, and Fusion experiments which all have unique needs and requirements.
