What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a hardworking and highly motivated R&D Systems Engineer to support the Tailored Operational Support Group (5970). This group designs, delivers and supports operational systems for Strategic Partnership Program/Intelligence Partnership Program sponsors. This role will lead a multi-disciplinary development team on projects that follow traditional development cycles based on standard methodologies, lead highly accelerated efforts to meet an urgent need and help pursue innovation efforts to broaden the team’s portfolio, engage with new sponsors in program development.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Tackle the full system lifecycle of a technical project: concept, design & fabrication, development testing, performance verification, delivery and post-delivery support.

  • Collaborate with sponsor, technical SMEs and management to define technical approach, architecture and design objectives for new system development efforts.

  • Coordinate and organize technical teams to ensure sponsor needs are met through careful planning and execution across a variety of fields.

  • Perform Interface Assessments and coordinate System Test Planning and perform System Verification & Validation to include verifying the final system meets sponsor. requirements and ensure records exist to support as-designed and as-built configurations, as part of configuration management efforts.

  • Lead anomaly investigations to identify root causes and define actions required for issue resolution.

  • Lead design and gate review preparation activities to demonstrate readiness to proceed forward.

  • Ensure sophisticated OPSEC and security requirements are addressed with design teams and partners.

  • Independently develop proposals to pursue innovation opportunities and broaden critical opportunities.

This position requires periodic travel

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in STEM field (Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Systems Engineering)

  • or Master’s in STEM plus four (4) years of relevant experience

  • or Bachelor’s in STEM plus eight (8) years of relevant experience

  • Experience in product realization

  • Two (2) or more years’ experience as a technical Lead and/or Project Lead for technical projects

  • Active DOE Q clearance and ability to acquire SCI access, which may require a polygraph

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Project leadership experience in Strategic Partnering Program (SPP) and Strategic Partnering Intelligence Program (SIPP) projects

  • Proven ability to collaborate with external government customers and communicate effectively on both technical and programmatic topics

  • Demonstrated experience building successful, multidisciplinary teams

  • Problem solving skills and ability to exercise systems thinking in a program/project setting in order to apply a broad approach of considering the “big picture” and broadening the perspective for analyzing a problem and identifying solutions

  • Familiarity with the design, development and qualification of radiation sensing, imaging or other sensing technologies (or other similar technically complex system including mechanical assemblies, electrical designs, electromechanical and electro-optical subsystems), and engineering a design from concept through demonstration or delivery

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask with competing priorities and changing and sometimes ambiguous environments

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling

  • Demonstrated ability to implement high-quality standards while establishing and maintaining effective and positive relationships with internal and external partners at all experience and authority levels

  • Experience in proposal writing and innovative efforts

  • Active SCI clearance

The Threat Intelligence Center enables the national security missions of the defense and intelligence communities to reduce threats to our nation by applying engineering expertise to develop solutions to some of the nation’s most challenging technical problems. The Tailored Operational Support Group is involved in the program management and development of technologies as part of the Threat Intelligence Center at Sandia. We provide research, design and development of innovative technologies and sensing systems and technical assessments complemented by intelligence-based analysis. Our teams are diverse technically and reach out to an extended network at the laboratories to address and assess critical national security issues with a multi-disciplinary approach. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
