Sandia National Laboratories R&D Systems Engineer - Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Mission Engagement (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico


We are seeking a R&D S&E, System Engineer to be a part of the team supporting Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Mission Engagement and ND Associate Lab Directors executive team. We are looking for a self-starter, team-oriented, experienced professional who enjoys learning and working in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

On a given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop, nurture, and rely upon an extensive network of Subject Matter Experts in the ND program and line organizations as needed to respond to urgent requests from ND leadership and its customers and stakeholders.
  • Plan and execute VIP level visits on behalf of ND Associate Labs Director, in coordination with protocol and Executive Chief of Staff; including support to Nuclear Deterrence Advisory Boardfor meetings, presenters/presentations, reports, contracts and other details.
  • Have regular direct interaction with the ND Leadership and the broader Sandia Executive Leadership to support high-level communications, such as key messages, briefings, technical whitepapers, fact sheets, etc.
  • Support special projects/Rapid Response activities as assigned by Chief Engineer of Nuclear Weapons (CENW) and ND Engagement leadership as related to the ND programs.These are ad hoc assignments that require quick-turn reports about an issue that may require a conceptual approach/plan or proposed path forward.

This position will require occasional business travel


  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or related discipline plus 5 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  • A technical working knowledge of Sandia Nuclear Deterrence
  • Current and active DOE Q-level, or DoD Top Secret, clearance and the ability to obtain SCI and Sigma security clearances.


  • Broad knowledge of Sandia programs and capabilities, including where to go for information.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse projects with complex deliverables and short timelines. (ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels, including executive management.
  • Awareness of technology and policy issues as they relate to our nation’s nuclear deterrent.
  • Understanding of NNSA and DOD organizations and missions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and track activity required to report up to leadership team.
  • Commitment to delivering on Sandia’s core mission through contributing to the ND ALD’s success in a myriad of environments.

Department Description:

ND Mission Engagement team provides quick turn-around technical analysis and data synthesis to support the Associate Lab Director for Nuclear Deterrence and the Chief Engineer for Nuclear Weapons in response to rapidly evolving program issues.The department staff integrate with executive team members to support briefings, communications, and interactions with external customers and stakeholders.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance to start.

Position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance or active clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD) to be considered for this position.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
