The department is seeking R&D System Engineers to perform the role of Weapon System Engineer (WSE) on the W80-4. The WSE is a key interface between Product Realization Teams (PRTs) and the Systems team. The WSE advocates for both their assigned component(s) and the warhead system. The WSE ensures the scope and requirements for their component(s) are defined and validated with stakeholders, the design and integration activities are managed within cost and schedule, and the product(s) as-built meets requirements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as the primary interface between Systems and the PRT. Flow all System guidance to PRTs and provide feedback to Systems for continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with other WSEs to work component interfaces.

  • Understand component technical design, design trades and strategies for development and qualification.

  • Understand the risks and handling plans associated with those risks.

  • Be knowledgeable of the Earned Value data for the PRT and understand the variance causes and recovery plans.

  • Participate in and contribute to PRT activities. Understand PRT status, successes, emerging concerns, etc.

  • Dry-run material with PRT for reviews before delivery. Attend PRT meetings, reviews, and review board (Risk Review Board, Change Control Board, etc.) meetings when PRT is on the agenda.

  • Inform Systems of PRT status and issues and solicit aid as required.

  • Decompose higher level requirements and allocate appropriately to component(s).

  • Review component test and qualification plans. Consult with quality to understand potential pitfalls and assist PRT in root cause analysis when failures occur and the development of resolution plans.

  • Understand hardware needs and delivery schedule. When deliverables are late, understand estimates for expected completion/delivery.

The W80-4 Life Extension Program (LEP) is intended to strengthen our nation’s strategic deterrence, by modernizing the W80 warhead and integrating it with the Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) missile. The program’s scope includes design and qualification of the warhead and integration of non-nuclear and nuclear components within the warhead. Additionally, we are responsible for developing the Joint Test Assembly for surveillance along with trainer hardware, handling gear, and other ancillary equipment. It is the first modernization program to be conducted in parallel with a missile development program.
