Organization 02932, Weapon Analysis, is currently seeking an R&D Systems Engineer! The selected candidate will, and/or partner with others, to accomplish modeling, simulation, testing, and analysis to determine how Components and Systems respond probabilistically to mechanical insults, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), or other electrical insults. Similarly, this engineer may quantify Electromagnetic (EM) field leakage into effective Faraday cages and evaluate how alternating and direct current (AC/DC) from external sources insult the product or system (this may include supervising mod/sim and analysis/testing done by others).

In support of our Nuclear Deterrence mission and the System's "Nuclear Safety Theme," on any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Work proactively and team with Systems and design teams to ensure Component and System designs are conducive to safe operations at production facilities

  • Ensure the characterization and mitigation of sources of unintended electrical and mechanical energy introduced during the production process or internal to the Component or System

  • Work closely and compromise with peer SMEs at Sandia National Laboratories and at other Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) design and production sites

  • Document detailed technical justifications and rationale for the Component/System responses to the electrical and mechanical insults

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, or in a related field, plus 5 years related experience; or a Master's degree in above plus 1 year related experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job

  • The ability and willingness to occasionally travel to other related NSE locations to support mission and partner needs

  • The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

  • An Advanced technical degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field

  • Experience with the following:

  • Knowing how sophisticated systems interact and respond to external stimuli

  • Production environments and related safety considerations

  • Teaching and/or providing instruction to others

  • Developing networks that go beyond organizational boundaries, to build team consensus and solve sophisticated problems

  • Proven leadership and project management skills; in particular, the ability to exercise resourcefulness and initiative in approaching and dealing with ambiguity

  • A dedication to Sandia's Nuclear Deterrence mission

  • A proven track record of effectively communicating and interacting with multiple levels of personnel and partners in the Nuclear Security Enterprise

  • Self-motivation and attention to detail

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
