Sandia National Laboratories R&D Systems Engineer (Early/Mid-career) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Are you passionate about working in a high functioning, inter-disciplinary collaborative team in engineering? If so, join our team! We are seeking a highly-motivated, professional R&D Systems Engineer to join the Sandia Production & System Integration team!

The Sandia Production & System Integration team has mission responsibility for the production of technically complex, high reliability components in support of the nation’s nuclear deterrence (ND) strategy. The organization leads the negotiation and communication of complex requirements with ND customers: NNSA, Navy, Air Force, Sandia’s Systems and Sub-Assembly organizations, and next-assembly NSE agencies (Kansas City, Savannah River, Los Alamos, and Pantex). You will use knowledge of component and system level performance requirements to define and negotiate production requirements and lead the transition from the development/qualification phase to the production phase for several technologies. You will apply expertise and experience in one or more engineering fields to make judgments crucial to the delivery of the product through activities such as system-level analysis and evaluating competing characteristics between system elements.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as the primary representative to several ND component teams for ND modernization, legacy, and active stockpile programs through the negotiation, management, and delivery of production requirements for several technologies.

  • Establish strong relationships with key influencers and collaborate with cross-functional teams including ND Systems, ND Component Engineering teams, and next-assembly NSE agencies.

  • Initiate, develop, and execute systems and processes while applying engineering judgment on several technologies.

  • Understand the components and production processes for multiple technologies.


  • Bachelors in a STEM field plus 3 years of related experience or a Masters in a STEM field

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE-Q- clearance.


  • Experience with leading projects or programs through the Nuclear Deterrence system engineering lifecycle.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing and/or manufacturing systems, subsystems, or components.

  • Self-motivated to identify and implement productivity improvements.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with implementing Sandia policies impacting design, development, and production activities and projects.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a passion and talent for fostering constructive working relationships with our customers and partners.

  • Demonstrated ability in anticipating customer and partner needs.

  • Strong oral, written, presentation, and negotiation skills and ability to work effectively in diverse team environments.

The Component Science, Engineering, and Production Organization (7500), is responsible for the research, design, qualification, production, and surveillance of over one hundred products across three product lines: power sources, explosives, and neutron generators. Our products support both Nuclear Deterrence and Strategic Partnership Program customers.     Security Clearance:
