We are seeking early- to mid-career R&D data scientists/engineers/analysts who will:

  • Bring a multitude of subject areas (systems engineering, data science, physics, computer science, software engineering) to bear in order to analyze and test mission capabilities using both simulation and operational data

  • Applying system knowledge to analyze, test, and characterize mission capabilities of detection systems through data

  • Employ depth and breadth in understanding of complex systems to advise on and perform

  • System specification formulation

  • Test design and execution

  • System performance evaluations

  • Model/algorithm development

  • Mission trending

  • Anomaly identification and investigation

  • Design and implement high-fidelity system test endeavors, systems research and development endeavors for current and future systems

  • Develop and apply foundational physics, sensing systems, and algorithmic understanding to high consequence systems

  • Advance the state of modeling, simulation and analysis capabilities of the larger organization

  • Frequently present and document results to peers, program leads, and customers, communicating concisely to inform actions/investments

  • Integrate with a dynamic team that features:

  • Applied understanding of complex system of systems

  • Expertise in test design, execution, analysis, and reporting

  • Innovative analysis solutions for a wide variety of customers and objectives

  • Multi-disciplinary collaboration to achieve goals

On any given day the selected candidate may be called on to:

  • Lead a group of researchers/engineers to solve difficult scientific problems for national security purposes

  • Apply state-of-the art techniques which solve the most challenging data analysis problems for a wide array of customers.

  • Work collaboratively with customers to understand requirements, available data and mission need

  • Assess current and future system mission performance through modeling, simulation, and analysis techniques, implementing software solutions to aid in said analyses

  • Contribute to deeply rewarding missions through engagement with diverse specialties and in areas such as data fusion, signal processing, analytics, cloud computing, machine learning, modeling/simulation, service oriented architectures, physics, systems/electrical/mechanical engineering, and in the future big-data management and visualization, plus pattern recognition

  • Engage in Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Proposals

Candidates will be interviewed and hired to support one or multiple teams within the 6377 — Modeling, Simulation, & Analysis department.

Additionally, this role will include a variety of interactions across (6300, 6700, 1500, 9300) including collaboration with partner organizations and partner projects.   • Undergraduate and Graduate (Masters or PhD) degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or other relevant STEM degree. A relevant STEM bachelor's degree plus 4 years directly related experience may also be considered

  • Experience with modeling, scientific computing and/or machine/deep learning, image and signal processing.

  • Can obtain a DOE Q clearance


  • Foundation in modern software development practices and tools

  • Foundation in full life cycle software systems engineering

  • Technical leadership experience

  • Self-directed, organized, and able to work independently as well as in a number of different sized teams

  • Proven strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills

  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills

  • Experience writing proposals

  • Experience publishing and presenting on complex technical topics

  • Knowledge and experience with implementation of the full software development process using Agile or other Iterative methodologies

  • Experience developing critical data processing and analysis systems

  • Ability to work with various subject areas across multiple development sub-teams

  • Full stack software development, including familiarity with modern software development practices and tools

  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and handle contending priorities

  • Strong customer-focus and can-do response to questions/requests with demonstrated outstanding follow through

  • Current Q Clearance can obtain a SCI clearance

Security Clearance:
