NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$162,200 - $275,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an R&D Electrical Engineer Senior Scientist/Engineer to be part of a high-performance team which architects, develops, and fields exquisite avionics and digital embedded systems for national security applications. The RF and Electronic Center’s work supports missions needs such as Navigation, Guidance and Control (NGC), GPS-denied Navigation, Electronic Warfare (EW), Hypersonics, radar ISR, and other warfighter applications. You will be working on numerous critical national security missions and R&D initiatives. Your responsibilities would include partnership in defining and advocating the Center’s vision for survivable avionics research and development across multiple contested domains for both SPP and ND applications.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide research and development technical leadership to demanding national security programs

  • Lead teams to architect, implement, and deploy advanced avionics for high consequence systems, driving innovation in survivability, modularity, and reliability.

  • Work with management and staff to develop strategic direction for the department, group, and center.

  • Lead the center to be at the cutting edge of Research and Development (R&D) in avionics for high consequence systems. Goals will include the development of proposals for research funding through the Lab Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program and submission of papers to national conferences as appropriate.

  • Interact with internal and government customers as a subject matter expert or as a technical lead

  • Guide, support, and lead technical innovation including staying aware of current and future external development.

  • Provide mentoring and guidance for staff and management.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Masters degree in electrical engineering, microwave & sensor engineering, computer engineering, or another related STEM field

  • Plus Fifteen (15) or more years of experience in development of advanced and multidisciplinary systems

  • Demonstrated recognition in your technical community as an expert in avionics, electronic board design, embedded system development, and system integration across Sandia or a similar organization

  • Extensive experience:

  • working collaboratively both internally and externally

  • working in a high rigor product development environment

  • developing and applying new methods and innovative thinking to solve complex and difficult problems

  • Experience integrating and leading collaborative teams and evidence of multiple sponsor deliveries by these teams

  • Demonstrated excellence in mentoring

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI security clearance, which may require a polygraph.

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally, your background includes some of the following desired qualifications:

  • PhD in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related STEM degree

  • Extensive experience in:

  • architecting and developing advanced avionics systems to work in highly contested environments

  • testing and mitigation of avionics systems in radiation, Directed Energy (DE), Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) or other Electronic Warfare (EW) environments

  • system engineering, system implementation, system integration and system deployment for large scale programs

  • Experience leading a team and individually taking a design from the concept phase through to the integration, testing, and deployment phase

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships among peers, staff, management, and customers

  • Excellent teaming and communication skills

  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS Security Clearance, active SCI

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
