The Firing Sets and Controllers Organization (07626) supports Sandia’s Nuclear Deterrence (ND) mission as the design agency (DA) for Firing Sets, Impact Sensors, and Controllers for in-production and fielded systems. We are seeking to fill technical staff positions with talented engineers who are looking to partner with the production agency and systems customers to evaluate the impacts of manufacturing nonconformances on the performance of our components, assess aging characteristics of fielded assemblies, and improve our designs for manufacturability. In this role, you will have an opportunity to own or contribute to resolution of problems critical to production of ND hardware. This position will allow the selected candidate to gain exposure to multiple fielded systems at various stages of development and production.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Utilize engineering principles to evaluate test results of performance parameters

  • Provide ownership and direction for designs

  • Coordinate with system customers, production agencies, and other stakeholders to support the disposition of nonconforming parts

  • Partner with the production agency to identify opportunities to implement design for manufacturability principles and update design definition

  • Communicate technical information and/or project status to team members, customers, and management

  • Troubleshoot and evaluate testing failures and defects

  • Proactively identify risks and establish handling plans and mitigation strategies

  • Influence the design of development components by generating design guides, reviewing designs for compliance with design-for-manufacturing principles, participating in engineering working groups, and providing critical technical reviews

  • Engage production agency engineering staff and review production metrics to identify and implement continuous improvements such as process or design changes.

  • Perform statistical analysis of engineering test data to identify potential trends, outliers, and other data anomalies

  • Maintain product definition using engineering change orders

This position provides an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, develop technical skills, interface with leadership across the NSE for multiple ND programs, and collaborate with engineering research teams across the NSE.

You will also support strategic planning activities to improve the execution of production support. Some travel is required.
