NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$101,400 - $201,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineering to join our dynamic team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Research past and present nuclear weapon systems to support design activities.

  • Lead development of system level design concepts, architecture, and physical layout (position, size and location of major components and subassemblies within the reentry body) incorporating requirements, nuclear safety, advanced concepts, and modularity.

  • Perform system/subsystem trade studies and technical evaluations, balancing performance, costs, risks, materials, functionalities, and technology maturation thus influencing the down selection towards a new warhead design.

  • In partnership with Tech Mat counterparts, serve as the primary interface between systems and component/subsystem teams to drive successful design integration across all phases of the program and to ensure system requirements are documented and met.

  • Support the characterization and qualification of the W93/Mk7 design.

  • Interact with other laboratories, production sites, and component organizations to enable the design, integration, and manufacturability of the W93/Mk7 system (DoD, NNSA, LANL, LM Space, KCNSC, Pantex, AWE, Pantex).

  • Review and approve system, subsystem, or component level CAD drawings.

  • Review and approve simulation results with respect to performance requirements.

  • Create system/subsystem/component technical requirements, interface documents, and associated design definitions applying program configuration management tools (PRIME, DOORS, PDMlink, MBSE) in coordination with the requirements team.

  • Coordinate and complete the modeling, analysis, and model-based engineering activities to meet system objectives.

  • Support problem solving and issue resolution to address hardware interface challenges.

  • This position requires domestic travel, and potentially occasional international travel.

Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field plus 8 or more years’ of related experience

  • Experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • System engineering of large and complex systems

  • System design, integration and qualification

  • Nuclear weapon design and development including designing for nuclear safety and manufacturability

  • Proficiency in a CAD tool (Creo or Solidworks)

  • Proficiency in PDMLink configuration management

  • Mass properties management

  • Managing system trade studies

  • Coordinating computational modeling and simulation activities

  • Active US DOE Q security clearance and the ability to obtain additional security clearances as required (ex. SCI) which may require polygraph tests

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in system engineering of complex systems.

  • Experience working on ND programs, either in systems or component organizations.

  • Experience working on system design, development, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and work in a diverse set of technologies and fields.

  • Self-directed with strong analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment showing initiative and leadership.

  • Must be able to apply strong interpersonal and communication skills working with a diverse team ranging from skilled laborers to PhD engineers/scientists.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement technical work.

  • Design and analysis for additive manufacturing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively across technical teams, collaborate with customers and subcomponent teams, and conduct tradeoffs to identify system solutions.

  • Motivation to work with a large integrated Systems team with broad interaction.

  • Ability to negotiate competing requirements to give the best system-level outcome.

  • Ability to discover, understand and articulate constraints, options, paths-forward.

  • Commitment to operational safety, security and quality.

The W93 Systems Design Department provides the design and technical maturation leadership for the W93/Mk7 system, maximising the engineering knowledge of our team members to realize a compliant and qualified system. We engage with our external design agency partners (LANL, LM Space, AWE), W93 System Integration Department (2449), and the many internal SNL customers to accomplish this monumental program objective which supports the future viability and effectiveness of our nation’s nuclear deterrent.

The W93 System Design Department partners closely with the Advanced and Exploratory Systems department which is engaged in multiple activities focused on building and demonstration of future capabilities, including those needed for W93, working with many external and internal customers and helping the laboratory to coordinate investments into research areas that will ensure the future viability and effectiveness of our nation’s nuclear deterrent.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
