We are seeking a R&D Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team!
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Perform mechanical engineering functions for the HERMES III, Saturn and SPHINX pulsed power accelerators
Design and improvement of hardware and systems
Oversee maintenance activities
Establish a spare parts program
Work with other Sandia organizations to develop common engineering documentation practices
Perform stress calculations and develop innovative designs
Turn concepts into realistic designs and finally into buildable and user-friendly hardware
Provide support for the Saturn Recapitalization Project

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant STEM and five years’ experience
Experience in mechanical design, CAD modeling, design for manufacturing, mechanical analysis (structural, thermal), final hardware assembly, and/or environmental testing
Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance
An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related engineering field) with evidence of high academic achievement
Strong technical writing skills and the ability to prepare effective documentation
Experience with design of equipment to withstand harsh environments
Experience working on programs that require adherence to standards and requirements
Working with suppliers to procure mechanical hardware
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as personal initiative, responsiveness, attention to detail and organization skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and work successfully in a team environment
Willingness to solve problems in a highly collaborative environment
Experience with finite element analysis (structural and dynamic) and solid modeling software
Ability to meet challenging design requirements and deliver hardware while meeting milestones within cost, schedule, and performance
Active DOE Q-Level security Clearance
Solidworks and CREO software experience
The AGT Accelerator Operations Department (1342) is responsible for the operation and continual development of the Saturn, HERMES III, and SPHINX pulsed power accelerators. The primary objective of the department is to provide an applied research environment for radiation effects and weapon physics experiments. The machines generate electrical pulses of up to 20 million Volts and up to 12 million Amperes with nanosecond durations to create very intense radiation environments. These hostile environments present very challenging research and development opportunities in areas such as: current, voltage, X-ray and Gamma-ray diagnostics, data acquisition, control and automation systems. Department 1342 also conducts pulsed power research and development to: improve radiation source fidelity, increase the output and fluence, as well as to improve the overall reliability and reproducibility of the accelerators. These unique, world class facilities are an essential part of the NNSA's Stockpile Stewardship Program.
