Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for the nation's security? Join a diverse team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security!

You could be the Mechanical Engineer we are seeking to join our dynamic team to support design and product realization efforts for the Pulsed Power Sciences Center. This work is typically the realization of complex pulsed power systems which integrate complex hardware, unique control systems, state of the art diagnostics, and supporting infrastructure that must operate in in critical extreme environments.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Use engineering principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, processes, or systems; to construct or operate the same with cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions
  • Conceptualize, design, analyze, and manage product realization of hardware on current and next generation accelerators and pulsed power machines
  • Engage with physicists and scientists in the realization of complex hardware systems to perform advanced research
  • Develop dynamic state of the art sensors, diagnostics, and pulsed power concepts
  • Accomplish sub-scale and full-scale testing of designs in and for use in pulsed power environments
  • Work to meet critical schedules in an extremely exciting environment
  • Present concepts, designs, test data, results, status to management and team members
  • Engage with a team of engineers, designers, scientists, and technologists to resolve complex hardware realization issues
  • Minimal travel as required, for training or to support project efforts

Required:

  • Master’s in Mechanical Engineering or relevant STEM discipline and two years’ experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in a relevant STEM discipline plus 5 years’ experience
  • Experience in producing designs, models, and product definition of complex objects
  • Experience using Creo Parametric and/or Solidworks and PDMLink tools
  • Experience with engineering design tools for finite element analysis (FEA) or thermal analysis such as: ABAQUS, ANSYS, CTH
  • Experience in leading technical projects
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE L security clearance or equivalent

Desired:

  • Experience in creating mechanical product design definition to include 3D solid models and mechanical drawings
  • Must be able to independently seek definition, evaluate, analyze, and then realize mechanical designs based on physicists and electrical designers’ visions
  • Engineering and design experience in pulsed power systems (i.e mechanical systems subjected to extremely high current and voltage environments resulting in dynamic mechanical and thermal loads)
  • Systems engineering experience to include configuration management, generating and validating requirements
  • Project management experience to include developing schedules and work breakdown structures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to present to diverse audiences
  • Experience directing and overseeing manufacturing of hardware

Department Description:

The Pulsed Power Sciences Center (1600) is accountable for advancing the understanding, development, and application of pulsed power for the missions of the nuclear weapons program. The Center also utilizes its major experimental, theoretical, and computational capabilities to meet the national security and fundamental science needs of diverse Sandia and external customers. Center 1600 is Sandia's primary organization for research in High Energy Density Physics (HEDP), Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), Advanced Radiography, Pulsed Power Science and Technology, and Fusion Technologies.

The Pulsed Power Engineering and Design Organization (1690) supports the engineering needs for the Pulsed Power Sciences Center by providing advanced engineering, design, and documentation services supporting current and future pulsed power machine development and maintenance. Additionally, the department supports other Sandia groups and external partners with engineering services by performing analysis, testing, and design. We provide the technical expertise needed to deliver and support robust, cost-effective pulsed power systems services. We maintain the required mechanical engineering and design staff needed to design, deliver, and support state-of-the-art pulsed power systems.
