Sandia National Laboratories R&D Mechanical Engineer (Early/Mid-Career) in Albuquerque, New Mexico


We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to support neutron generator tester development. As a member of our team, you will be working with the lead Mechanical Engineer on the development and maintenance of mission critical testers for the Neutron Generator Enterprise. You will be joining a team whose core values include timely delivery to our mission and continuous improvement of our processes.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Review and define mechanical tester requirements
  • Design and create mechanical systems with an electrical and software interface
  • Procure COTS equipment that meets requirement specifications and implementation needs
  • CAD design, modeling, and configuration management of fabrication ready drawings


  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in mechanical engineering


  • Knowledge and experience of using drawing standards for documentation
  • Ability to identify a problem and putting together sound technical justification of how to solve the problem
  • Fabrication experience and knowledge of design for manufacturability
  • Ability to interface with an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Experience with CREO and PDMLink
  • Experience working collaboratively in team settings
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and expand technical skills
  • Detail-oriented mindset and strong organization skills

Department Description:

This team is responsible for enabling the acquisition of neutron generator performance data. Our vison is to “acquire hi-fidelity test data to enable high consequence decisions.” Our mission is “delivering exemplary test solutions in the national interest.” We define, design, build, and qualify automated test equipment used to support neutron generator S&T, development, production, shelf life, and surveillance testing. Continuously improving tester requirements, tester standardization, test fidelity, tester capability, and delivery times are some of our core values. We also provide on-going engineering support of the existing tester fleet.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.
