NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$88,600 - $172,300 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

You could be the Mechanical Engineer we are seeking to join our dynamic team to support design and product realization efforts for the Pulsed Power Sciences Center! This work is typically the realization of complex pulsed power systems which integrate complex hardware, unique control systems, innovative diagnostics, and supporting infrastructure that must operate in critical extreme environments.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Use engineering principles and CAD tools to research, design, or develop complex hardware sets to demostrate/validate advanced scientic concepts.

  • Conceptualize, design, analyze, and manage product realization of hardware for the next generation of accelerators and pulsed power machines.

  • Engage with physicists and scientists in the realization of complex hardware systems to perform advanced research in the area of pulsed power.

  • Initiates, designs, develops, implements and evaluates new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research.

  • Work to meet critical schedules in an extremely exciting environment.

  • Present concepts, designs, test data, results, status to management and team members.

  • Engage with a team of engineers, designers, scientists, and technologists to resolve complex hardware realization issues.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering plus five years’ experience; or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering plus one year experience

  • Experience in producing mechanical designs, models, and product definition of complex objects

  • Experience with Solidworks

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience realizing designs through production

  • Must be able to independently seek definition, evaluate, analyze, and then realize mechanical designs based on physicists and electrical designers’ visions

  • Proven ability to lead design efforts to include engineers and designers

  • Engineering and design experience in pulsed power systems (i.e mechanical systems subjected to

  • extremely high current and voltage environments resulting in dynamic mechanical and thermal loads)

  • Experience using PDMLink (Windchill) tools in creating mechanical product design definition to include

  • 3D solid models and mechanical drawings

  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Exceptional communication skills and proven ability to work in collaborative teams

  • Experience with CREO

  • Active DOE Q or equivalent security clearance

About Our Team:

Department 1692, Load Hardware & Target Fabrication engineers, designs and documents all "Z" Load Hardware, and assembles/installs/refurbishes all the Load Hardware and targets for the experiments on the Z Machine. The department is composed of engineers, designers, and technologists working together in a collaborative environment developing new hardware designs and interacting with scientists from around the world that work on the "Z" accelerator to pursue research in the areas of atomic physics, shock physics, radiation transport, planetary science, and inertial confinement fusion. This department performs research on the use of surface coatings, surface coating processes and hardware designs improving performance, reliability, and repeatability of science experiments conducted. The department is responsible for production and development of all Load Hardware working with internal resources and outside vendor.
