Sandia National Laboratories RD Materials Science - Thermal Spray & Welding (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Salary Range:

$99,700 - $196,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a dedicated R&D Materials Science Professional with a strong materials processing background whose expertise covers a broad range of (1) experience leading programs from R&D to production qualification and (2) experimental and predictive capabilities.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Apply fundamental materials and metallurgical process development and property characterization principles to Thermal Spray Technologies

  • Develop technical solutions to challenging problems working with the TSRL team

  • Develop and lead a component production team

  • Interact with a variety of customers and supporting organizations

  • Some travel for business needs

Qualifications We Require:

  • Masters in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field plus a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)

  • Experience with materials and process development, characterization techniques, and process-structure-property relationships

  • Experience with robotics

  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in research & development or production

  • Experience leading a program in R&D or production

  • Ability to collaborate as a member of a team

  • Experience working with external customers

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Experience transferring technology from R&D to Production

  • Knowledge of NW Mission and Systems

  • Hands on Experience with Thermal Spray Technologies

  • PhD in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field

  • Experience publishing papers in peer reviewed journals and presenting research at technical conferences

The Thermal Spray & Welding department (1834) provides scientific and engineering expertise in the area of Thermal Spray coatings. Six distinct processing methods in two thermal regimes are used to spray coatings that include Polymers, Ceramics, Base and Alloy Metals, Refractory Metals and Alloys, and complex material mixtures. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative innovative materials science to systems-based engineering and manufacturing based solutions
