NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Salary Range:
$101,400 - $201,400 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a R&D S&E, Materials Science engineer to lead a team of researchers developing new electrochemical energy storage technologies to achieve decarbonization of the electric power grid.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Perform material science research to develop new technologies for long-duration energy storage
Present your work at a conference or DOE hosted event
Lead multi-lab proposals to address R&D gaps related to low-cost, long-duration energy storage
Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must work onsite at the Sandia Albuquerque location.
Qualifications We Require:
Ph.D. in materials science and engineeing or a related field, plus 4 years of relevant experience
Demonstrated experience coordinating energy storage activities accross multiple DOE national laboratories
Experience with low temperature molten sodium battery technologies
Active DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Active participation in professional societies
Previous experience interfacing with the DOE Office of Electricity
Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by a strong publication record and technical presentations
Patents associated with molten sodium battery technologies
About Our Team:
The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department is focused on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems including the development of low cost battery technologies, safety and reliability of energy storage systems, power electronics and power conversion systems, computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. In addition, the department manages several activities for the DOE OE Energy Storage program related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets. The department works closely with a number of departments across Sandia in materials sciences, power sources, electrical sciences, fire science, power systems, renewables and grid integration. We also have active collaborations with many stakeholders in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
