Sandia National Laboratories RD Engineer - Wearables and Robotics R&D (Early Career) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking a R&D Mechanical Engineer to support testing and development of robotic systems that interact closely with humans, including exoskeletons. The selected candidate will work as part of multidisciplinary science/engineering teams doing groundbreaking research and technology development to support our nation’s security needs. This position requires a broad spectrum of skills in robotic systems, controls, and biomechanics R&D.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan and execute human subject testing with robotic systems.

  • Analyze data from biomechanical and robotic sensing systems.

  • Develop novel robotic hardware or control systems to improve worker safety and performance.

Work will be conducted in a team environment dedicated to developing, testing, and fielding novel robots that work closely with people. Work will include executing technical tasks with excellence and may include participating in the development of competitive funding proposals, working with existing or future customers and collaborators, and publishing results in peer reviewed journals.

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical / Bio / Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics, with a focus on robotics and/or biomechanics

  • Educational or work experience with one of more of the following:

  • Developing or testing wearable robotic systems, prosthetics, orthotics, and/or exoskeletons

  • Musculoskeletal biomechanical testing, modeling, and/or analysis

  • Developing and testing control systems for human-interactive robotics

  • Human subject testing

  • Data analysis and/or algorithm development (e.g. in Matlab, Python, C, C++, or similar languages)

  • Design implementation and testing of robotic hardware and/or control algorithms

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

    Desired:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical / Bio / Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics, with research experience in musculoskeletal biomechanics, multi-body dynamics, and/or human-interactive robotics

  • Experience in developing, simulating, or testing wearable systems, including exoskeletons, prosthetics, and/or orthotics

  • Experience using and/or analyzing data from biomechanical test equipment, including VO2, motion capture, force plates, and EMG

  • Experience with robotic simulation and control platforms, including ROS, Gazebo, or similar interfaces

  • Experience with musculoskeletal modeling methods and software, such as OpenSIM

  • Experience in the development of mechatronic systems

  • Ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences, in written and oral formats

  • Ability to work with a team

  • Commitment to applying safe work practices and procedures

    Department Description:

Organization 06533 Unmanned Systems & Autonomy R&D, specializes in autonomous operations of unmanned systems, advanced controls, miniature mechanical design and fabrication, advanced drive system development, and the human/machine interface. We advance security by providing next generation unmanned systems and autonomy solutions. We have established leadership in this field through capabilities such as active, autonomous perception, distributed control of heterogeneous systems, real-time control of dynamic systems, miniature mechatronic design and fabrication, and advanced human-machine interface R&D. With state-of-the-art facilities and the creation of an exoskeleton testbed, equipped with advanced robotic and biomechanical test equipment, we are a key government resource in the evaluation of wearable technologies for worker safety. The department conducts numerous active research development, and application projects for a variety of customers, both internal to Sandia and across the national security establishment and collaborates heavily with partners across Sandia. The department is one of five in the Autonomy & Unmanned Systems Group within the Weapon and Force Protection Center.
