What Your Job Will Be Like:
Are you interested in developing transformational electromagnetic capabilities at one of the world’s premier EM facilities? Do you want to perform innovative research impacting shielding, coupling, and interference with electrical circuits and systems? Are you passionate about research that impacts a broad range of problems of national importance?In this postdoctoral role, you will support research that impacts broad-ranging national security areas in the broadly defined domains of electromagnetics and to its application to electric grid, military, and other critical systems.Your research will support Sandia’s mission to create new capabilities using electromagnetics and how to increase the resiliency of systems to electromagnetic energy.Key functions of this role include:
Address complex problems in support of broad-ranging mission areas
Foster creativity and advance exploration at the forefront of electromagnetics and its application to electrical components, systems, and materials.
Contribute to high-risk, high-value research and development
Collaborate with highly motivated and talented researchers on challenging research questions using state-of-the-art resources
Disseminate your work via leading publication and conference venues
Collaborating with sponsors from defense, National security programs, and partners in utility systems and renewable energy
The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. You must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Qualifications We Require:
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Physics or in a related field
Experience in research and publishing in the areas of electromagnetic components, systems, or coupling/interference
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
Demonstrated experimental research in experimental electromagnetics
Experience in design, maintenance, and operation of electromagnetic systems
Demonstrated experimental research in materials and devices
Familiarity with standards
Experience leading and completing multiple programs and projects
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external sponsors
Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple simultaneous tasks
About Our Team:
Department 1331 is a multidisciplinary research and development group supporting NNSA Defense and Work for Other (WFO) Programs. Our capabilities include experimental electromagnetics, the design and manufacturing of advanced power electronics, compact high current drivers, electron beam accelerators, x-ray sources, development and analysis of advanced materials and components, and plasma physics. Department 1331 employs a comprehensive research approach that includes analysis, simulation, and hardware verification. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
