NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$101,400 - $201,400 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

We are seeking a motivated R&D Electrical Engineer to join the W87-1 JTA and Trainer Engineering Team. The successful candidate will be capable of solving complex, multi-disciplinary technical and programmatic challenges as part of our W87-1 Weapon System Engineering. Our team partners cross-functionally across the laboratories with the W87-1 systems organizations in 8250, component organizations, and testing and analysis organizations. The department also teams with external Nuclear Security Enterprise sites and customers including LLNL, KCNSC, Pantex, NNSA, and the USAF.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design system electrical architecture and maintain product definition documents (WD, CK), procedures, and testing requirements (PS).

  • Work deeply with a component product realization team or mission realization capability partner to solve technical problems, address issues, and reduce risk.

  • Represent the system engineering team within the component engineering teams to ensure component production realization is implemented in a manner that guarantees requirements are met, according to schedule.

  • Work across the systems teams (e.g., design, requirements, qualification, etc.) to perform system integration tasks or work towards resolution of issues and reduction of risk.

  • Author documents, procedures and requirements for subsystem and system level deliverables.

  • Interact with partner organizations within Sandia and across external partners, such as PX, DOD/USAF, NNSA, KCNSC, LLNL, and others.

  • Team with others to understand status or issues, document lessons learned, and execute deliverables to meet customer requirements.

  • Support JTA build procedures and test processes at SNL, PX, and USAF.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant STEM field, plus four (4) years of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus eight (8) years of experience.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above stated field.

  • Working knowledge of nuclear deterrence programs and processes.

  • Recent experience working on a nuclear weapon modernization program.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively networking and partnering with organizations both internal and external to Sandia.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively on cross-organizational/multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work with urgency on many competing priorities.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to proactively communicate challenging issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate, build, and work effectively across technical teams, to resolve issues and conduct trade-offs to identify system solutions.

About Our Team:

Department 7228 W88 ALTs 370/940 Product Realization, provide systems engineering and program integration for the US Navy’s Strategic Nuclear Weapons. The department is directly responsible for the design, development, and qualification the W88 ALT 370 System consisting of the Mk5 reentry body, the integrated Arming, Fuzing, and Firing (AF&F) system for the reentry body, and the ISA project named ALT 940. Other responsibilities include project planning and management, risk management, systems engineering design, development testing and modeling, and system qualification. Our departments focus has transitioned into early production in our partnership with our production agency to deliver Mk5 reentry bodies and AF&Fs to the nation’s deterrent needs. Our department resides in the Stockpile Management Group, responsible for all the NM Weapon Systems.

Security Clearance:
