What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about working in a high functioning, inter-disciplinary collaborative team in engineering? Sandia's Weapon Analysis organization is seeking an energetic R&D S&E, Electrical Engineer to support our important Weapon Analysis mission!

In support of our Nuclear Deterrence mission, you may be called upon to:

  • Work proactively and team with Systems Engineering and design teams to ensure Component and System designs are conducive to safe operations at production facilities

  • Through modeling/simulation, analysis and testing, characterize sources of unintended electrical and mechanical energy introduced during the production process or internal to the Component or System and work with others to mitigate these hazards

  • Work closely and negotiate with peer Subject Matter Experts at Sandia National Laboratories and at other Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) design and production sites, to assess potential hazards and determine the effectiveness of controls in production areas

  • Create and document detailed technical justifications and rationale for the Component/System responses to electrical and mechanical insults

  • Identify, initiate and implement continuous improvement activities

  • Summarize and present information to management, customers and to stakeholders

  • Position is available in Albuquerque, NM or Amarillo, TX

The selected candidate may accomplish modeling, simulation, testing, and analysis to determine how Components and Systems respond probabilistically to mechanical insults, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), lightning or other electrical insults. Similarly, this engineer may quantify Electromagnetic (EM) field leakage into effective Faraday cages and evaluate how alternating and direct current (AC/DC) from external sources insult the product or system. This technical work may include supervising mod/sim and analysis/testing done by others.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or in a related field

  • The ability and willingness to occasionally travel to other related Nuclear Security Enterprise locations to support mission and partner needs

  • The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • An Advanced technical degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field

  • Developing relationships that go beyond organizational boundaries, to build team consensus and solve sophisticated and challenging problems

  • Proven leadership and project management skills; in particular, the ability to exercise resourcefulness and initiative in approaching and dealing with ambiguity

  • A proven track record of effectively communicating and interacting with multiple levels of personnel and partners in the Nuclear Security Enterprise

  • Self-motivation and attention to detail

  • Experience with the following:

  • From a Systems Engineering perspective, understanding how sophisticated systems interact and respond to external electrical stimuli

  • Production environments and related safety considerations

  • Teaching, mentoring and/or providing instruction to others

About Our Team:

The focus and goal of Weapon Analysis is to assist in the development of safe production operations. We help ensure that processes are adequately developed and controlled to prevent adverse consequences. Our team analyzes our Components and Systems against credible hazards, advising our customers of potential risks.

We are a self-directing, agile, and motivated team passionate about mutual support, the success of our customers, and continuous process improvement.

In order to continue to provide “Exceptional Service in the National Interest” our Vision is to:

  • Innovatively invest in the development of the skills and expertise of our staff members to provide excellent technical service and solutions

  • Broaden and deepen our technical bases in order to proactively meet emerging ND mission demands

  • Demonstrate our customer service through the quality of our work, our agility, efficiency, and our capability to support new technologies

  • Become a significant contributor and partner to Sandia’s and the NSE’s Nuclear Safety culture by the clear articulation and demonstration of our impact and value

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
