Organization 5621, Cyber Resilience R&D in the Cyber-Physical Mission group, is seeking experienced cybersecurity professionals who are eager to bring new and novel mathematical, statistical, and analytical techniques to achieve cyber system understanding. Our department and group primarily focus on the nexus of cyber and the physical world. We tackle national security challenges around defending non-traditional cyber systems, acquiring a deep system understanding of how complex cyber systems interact, and the identification of system vulnerabilities and threats. Our research goal is to develop the best cyber analysis approaches to create quantifiably provable results and assessment of the security of the nation’s high-consequence cyber systems. Our multidisciplinary team is looking for motivated, hardworking cyber scientists and engineers who excited by this challenge!

As part of our team, you will engage in work across a broad technology spectrum spanning cyber-physical, embedded, mobile, IoT, and large-scale, inter-connected networks. Group 5620 is a highly matrixed organization, and we encourage our researchers to team with subject matter experts from around the laboratory. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of cyber-physical systems, your job will grant you exposure to a broad team of researchers to help solve complex problems

To support our national security missions, our cybersecurity scientists and engineers engage in a variety of research areas including:

  • Modeling, simulation, and emulation of complex cyber systems

  • Cyber experimentation

  • Industrial control systems and SCADA systems

  • Network operation, information protection, and resilience

  • Manual and automated reverse engineering, vulnerability assessment, and malware analysis

  • Intrusion prevention/detection and response, penetration testing, and forensics

  • Data science, information theory, and streaming and behavioral analytics

  • Real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded systems, including Internet of Things (IoT)

  • Virtualization (system and network) and cloud technologies

  • Mobile devices and smart technologies

  • Autonomous/Automated systems


  • Master's degree in related field plus 2 years’ experience; or a Doctorate in a related field; or Bachelor’s in a related subject area plus 6 years’ experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Security, or Cyber Security

  • Proficiency with at least one programming language

  • Ability to acquire DOE Q security clearance and a SCI Clearance, which may require a polygraph


  • Experience with OT/ICS/SCADA devices and systems

  • Expertise in at least on programming language, preferably Python, C/C++, or Go.

  • Experience working with big data platforms/analytics

  • Conceptual understanding of verification and validation and uncertainty quantification

  • Experience creating mathematical system models

  • Experience with network data analytics and metric selection

  • Experience conducting research resulting in creative technical solutions with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Experience in reverse engineering, malware analysis, and network protocols

  • Experience with one or more of the following: network design, firewalls, network devices

  • Familiarity with secure-system design principles and information assurance principles

  • Well-developed leadership skills with the ability to prioritize and execute in a disciplined and focused manner

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely

  • Experience managing projects and doing external program development

  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines on a variety of activities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment

  • Active DOE Q security clearance, Active SCI Clearance.

    Department Description:

Sandia’s cybersecurity specialists are key contributors in addressing the country’s most pressing national security needs. The mission of the Information Operations Center is to assess, design, implement and influence the development of national security-related information systems and technologies in support of Defense and Intelligence customers and their national security missions. The Information Operations center consists of approximately 200 R&D technical staff working in most of the subdomains encompassed by the term “cybersecurity”.

    Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
