Salary Range:

$99,700 - $196,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI) at Sandia National Laboratories invites applications for a research scientist with broad emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. We seek outstanding experienced and early-career candidates with demonstrated academic credibility, technical leadership, and dedication to team-based innovation and entrepreneurship.

We are looking for people to join us in solving real-world problems with real-world data. Consistent with Sandia's mission as a National Laboratory, successful candidates will demonstrate interest in pursuing fundamental research and translating it into practical solutions to challenging problems of national importance. Examples range from physics and data-driven modeling and simulation for advanced engineering to sensor data analysis for nonproliferation to network data analysis for cyber security applications. CSRI staff create broad, interdisciplinary teams to solve hard problems. As a result, we are dedicated lifelong learners who consistently expand our expertise and technical skills through a combination of formal coursework, interaction with colleagues, and interaction with external partners.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at least 60% of the time.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in computer science, statistics, data science, information science, applied mathematics, engineering, or physical science. Alternatively, a PhD. in a related field with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)

  • Research experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or the data sciences, defined broadly

  • A proven record of publication in peer-reviewed journals or competitive peer-reviewed conferences

  • Experience with developing solutions based on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science methods using software tools such as Python, R, or other programming tools and packages

  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

About Our Team:

The Machine Intelligence and Visualization department conducts cutting-edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence for national security applications, including the advanced visualization of data and results. Our mission is to research, develop, and deploy methods that are credible, robust, and help decision makers in a variety of domains. Specific focus areas include geospatial analytics, tensor methods, intelligent agents, knowledge representation, open-source data analytics, and computational social science, though we incorporate a wide variety of skill sets in our work. We interact and collaborate with a broad range of Sandia staff and government customers while also maintaining a research presence in the external professional community by collaborating with both universities and industry. Members of the department publish peer-reviewed literature, participate in professional societies, and referee for conferences and journals.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
