Sandia National Laboratories R&D Computer Science - Remote Sensing Systems Scientist (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Salary Range:

$99,700 - $196,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated Engineer/Computer Scientist/Physicist to provide technical leadership for projects relating to remote sensing and satellite systems. Successful candidates will have deep knowledge in the areas of sensor design and data science to contribute to the conception, design, analysis, build, test, use, and/or data analysis of remote sensing systems. The roll is to independently conceive of novel solutions to challenging sensing problems related to imaging, spectroscopy, polarimetry, or other electro-optic sensing modalities. Furthermore, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work with sensing systems throughout their complete lifecycle, from conception to operation. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Create novel algorithms to analyze data in new ways

  • Instantiate modern computer science techniques to exploit data

  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to create a conceptual design of a remote sensing (satellite) system

  • Determine the appropriate sensing modality to solve a particular task

  • Lead teams of engineers to execute programs

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical field plus 5 years' relevant experience

  • Experience with remote sensing data handling

  • Experience in object/target detection and classification problems

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with:

  • Several remote sensing modalities

  • Developing data processing techniques for imaging and/or spectroscopic systems

  • Machine learning techniques

  • Industry standard methodologies for software development and engineering

  • Demonstrated experience leading interdisciplinary teams and acting as project lead

  • Knowledge of the effects of extreme environments (e.g. radiation, thermal extremes, shock, and vibration) on sensor systems

  • Familiarity with satellite programs and processes

  • Experience as a technical design lead on multi-disciplinary projects

  • Strong organization and planning skills and ability tackle more than one assignment at a time

  • Desire to learn new skills as required and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, project coordination, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to travel 20% or more of the time as dictated by program needs

Security Clearance:
