Sandia National Laboratories R&D Computer Science (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Remote Proliferation Detection Department is seeking a highly motivated computer/data scientist/engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. This position will focus on algorithm research and development of advanced computational methods, models, and software to support national security missions in a variety of high-impact areas within Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation R&D. Technical focus areas will include the following:

  • machine learning and deep learning
  • data science and analytics
  • modeling and simulation
  • computational science and mathematics
  • algorithm design and development
  • scientific and data visualization

This position necessitates various interactions across the laboratory, including collaboration with partner organizations and partner projects. In this role, there is significant opportunity for leadership development, and you will be given the opportunity to engage in leadership development activities both independently and as part of the larger team.

Required:

  • Undergraduate and advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in related STEM discipline; or Bachelor's in relevant STEM discipline, plus 4 years related experience
  • Proficiency in computer programming languages such as C++, Python, or R
  • Experience in software design, engineering and development skills, including familiarity with modern software development practices and tools
  • Ability to support moderate travel

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to perform as a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team, and within the framework of a research project which shows evidence of meeting deadlines
  • Experience in machine learning, statistical inference, data mining, or cloud service analytics
  • Experience developing data processing and analysis systems
  • Familiarity with optical remote sensing technologies, data, and formats
  • Excellent verbal & written communication and organizational skills
  • Experience using Gitlab and CI/CD pipeline
  • Experience with incorporating HPC assets into algorithms
  • Strong customer-focus and proactive response to questions/requests with demonstrated exceptional follow through

Department Description:

The Proliferation Detection Remote Sensing Department (6751) supports the NNSA Office of Nonproliferation Research and Development (NA-22) through establishing and maintaining collaborations for the execution of nonproliferation technology research, development and demonstration experiments, applications and field exercises. The department is responsible for Sandia’s programmatic and technical communications with NA-22 and other national labs, government agencies and organizations, working in this area.
