We are seeking an Aerospace Engineer to join the Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) II department.
On any given day, you may:
- Architect, model, simulate, and analyze military missions involving operation of various systems, actual and conceptual: spacecraft, missiles, radars, optical sensors, ground assets, and logistics systems
- Define performance metrics, and design and execute experiments to identify and determine mission design drivers against those metrics. This will be followed with mission and/or weapon design optimization such to maximize desired effect of performance metrics
- Research Navigation, Guidance, and Control algorithms and technologies
- Development and analysis of technology options
- Support local & remote testing
- You have an advanced (PhD or Masters) degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering
- You possess experience with system modeling of control and dynamical systems
- Your background includes experience with simulation tools such as Mathworks Matlab, Simulink and xPC Target
- You have experience with, or interest in, Navigation Technologies (GPS, IMU, etc.) and Control Technologies (TVC, ACS, Actuator, Aerodynamic Control Surface, etc.)
- You can obtain a required US DOE clearance
Ideally, your background also includes:
- Academic background in guidance algorithmic approaches such as Proportional Navigation
- General background in the application of Systems Engineering concepts
- Working knowledge of structural dynamics
- Experience with navigation systems including both GPS and inertial
- A very strong background in Aerospace Dynamical systems theory and related Mod/Sim applications experience
- Modeling and simulation of complex dynamical systems such as thrust vector control
- Experience with electrical avionic components and related system implementations
- Digital computer methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equations
- Documented coursework completion in the study of aerodynamics
- Working knowledge of structural dynamics
- Proficient using Mathworks products
- Hands-on experience using Simulink to implement 6DOF simulations for flight vehicle applications
- Applications experience with industry standard Government Off the Shelf (GOTS) and commercial software commodities such as GMAT, SIMDIS, and Satellite Tool Kit
- Familiarity with computer coding in C++, Fortran, C, C#, or other similar tools
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to team well with others
The Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) II department, 05427, provides technology solutions and support to both Offensive and Defensive Military Systems development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platforms. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. Our programs cover a broad spectrum of applications; from advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles dropped from aircraft, to maneuvering hypersonic warheads, to ballistic missile systems. All the activities require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of affiliated fully-integrated flight control system solutions. The NGC group is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas as well as activities for the Sandia Space Mission Program. The department strives to provide leadership to the Laboratory and the Nation in the creative development, use, and application of both NGC and mod/sim technologies. Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
