Are you willing to apply creativity, curiosity, and a tinkerer’s spirit to challenging laboratory investigation, material characterization, and novel prototypes?
We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to assist in the research, development, and design of critical power source materials and devices. 07549 has cradle-to-grave responsibilities within the Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) at Sandia for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) customers and beyond, and this position carries the opportunity to impact our technologies along many points of their life cycles.
As a lab owner, equipment user, and member of our diverse and highly driven team, you will conduct laboratory experimentation and characterization of power source components, assist in prototyping activities, carry out laboratory-focused continuous improvement, and enforce meticulous safety and security best practices.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Coordinate with staff in laboratory settings to design and execute benchtop experiments.
Build and test novel power source devices.
Perform lab ownership duties, including safety and work planning documentation, training, and continuous improvement.
Recommend and make modifications to components, processes, or test procedures to meet desired specifications.
Develop, build, and maintain a variety of instruments, hardware, and processes.
Record and analyze observations in support of R&D and product realization, including daily laboratory notebooks.
Support documentation efforts, including preparing data and information for scientific and engineering reports and publications.
Work both independently and as a member of a team.
Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
Associates degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) subject area.
Experience with laboratory instruments to measure and observe scientific phenomena.
Experience in laboratory operations (e.g., set-up/maintenance/work planning/ownership).
Ability to acquire a DOE “Q” Clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
Bachelors Degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) subject or equivalent experience and education.
Experience with work planning and controls.
Experience with device design and assembly.
Background and experience with electronics, electrochemistry, heat transfer, and/or power source technologies.
Knowledge of electronic circuits in common test equipment.
Familiarity writing and maintaining Labview applications.
Demonstrated ability and commitment to perform hazardous operations safely.
Ability to take general direction and implement technical activities without detailed guidance or supervision.
Ability to work in a team environment with staff, technologists, support personnel, and vendors.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Active DOE “Q” clearance
About Our Team:
Our team is part of the Power Sources Technology Group, working on high consequence technologies that support critical Nuclear Deterrence systems. We support the entire product life-cycle from development to production and legacy components. We also engage in R&D activities to develop power source solutions for the future.

Security Clearance:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
